Thematic maps in scientific publications

Abstract:

Mapy jsou běžnou součástí geografických odborných časopisů. Tyto mapy slouží k vizua-lizaci dosažených výsledků a podpoře vědeckých argumentů. Cílem této práce bylo zjis-tit, jestli mapy splňují základní kartografické požadavky. Pro analýzu a hodnocení byl vybrán vzorek 80 map z časopisů Geografie a Scottish Geographical Journal z roku 2003 a 2023. Mapy byly analyzovány dle četnosti jejich výskytu, způsobu vzniku, použité kar-tografické metody a dalších vlastností map. Vzorek byl také hodnocen na základě vybra-ných kartografických kritérií. Bylo zjištěno, že v časopise Geografie došlo ke zlepšení v kvalitě map. V časopise Scottish Geographical Journal naopak došlo k poklesu kvality map. Během sledovaného období téměř vymizely černobílé mapy, které byly nahrazeny barevnými mapami. Charakteristickým znakem map je naprosto chybějící informace o použitém souřadnicovém systému a často chybějící informace o zdroji podkladových dat.

Abstract:

Maps are a common part of geographic journals. These maps serve to visualize the achieved results and support scientific arguments. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to find out if maps meet the basic cartographic requirements. A sample of 80 maps from Geografie and the Scottish Geographical Journal from 2003 and 2023 was selected for analysis and evaluation. The maps were analysed according to their frequency of occurrence, mode of production, cartographic method used and other inherent map featu-res. The sample was also evaluated based on selected cartographic criteria. It was found that there was an improvement in the quality of maps in the Geography journal. In con-trast, there was a decline in the quality of maps in the Scottish Geographical Journal. Du-ring the monitored period, black and white maps almost disappeared and were replaced by colour maps. A characteristic feature of the maps is the complete lack of information on the coordinate system used and often missing information about the source of the un-derlying data.
