Ancient Geography and the Europe outside of the Border of Ancient World

Abstract:

V úvodní části diplomové budou představeni nejznámější kartografové a geografové z období antiky společně se stručným výkladem základních principů, které byly ve starověku aplikovány při tvorbě map. Následovat bude výčet a rozbor nejvýznamnějších objevných cesty z doby starověkého Řecka a Říma, které sloužily jako významný zdroj informací pro tehdejší kartografy a geografy. Práce je vymezena prostorem střední, severní a východní Evropy, proto budou zohledněny pouze výpravy do těchto končin. Stěžejní částí práce je komparace historických a geografických spisů šesti (potažmo osmi) velkých starověkých římských a řeckých autorů a sledování jejich zmínek o germánských kmenech v oblasti Velké Germánie pro období od 1. století př. n. l. až do 2. století n. l. (respektive 4. století n. l.) Cílem tohoto exkurzu je zjištění stavu vědomostí antických národů o etnikách mimo hranice antického světa.

Abstract:

The first part of the diploma thesis deals with the most famous cartographers and geographers of the antiquity together with a brief interpretation of basic principle used in ancient times for map´s making. After that, we focus on the most significant discoveries of the ancient nations (Greeks and Romans), which served as an important source of information for contemporary cartographers and geographers. The work is defined by the area of central, northern and eastern Europe, for that reason the work describes only expeditions to these regions. The main part of the thesis is the comparison of historical and geographical writings of six (or eight) great ancient Roman and Greek authors and their observation of the Germanic tribes in the region of Magna Germania from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD (or 4th century AD). The aim of this excursion is to determine the condition of knowledge of ancient nations about ethnicities outside the borders of the ancient world.
