Theories of Decline of Civilizations and the Present

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou teorie zániku a úpadku civilizací. Zánik civilizací je téma, které se v rámci filozofie dějin objevuje opakovaně. Díla spojená s touto tématikou (Zánik Západu O. Spenglera, Studie Dějin A. Toynbeeho) se často vyznačují moralizujícím tónem, fatalistickým chápáním obvykle cyklického pojetí dějin jako neměnného historického zákona, důrazem na duchovní složku civilizace přecházejícím v mysticismus a implicitní obhajobou nějakého, obvykle konzervativního, politického stanoviska. Právě tyto rysy klasických teorií zániku byly jedním z cílů Popperovy kritiky historicismu, která byla natolik působivá, že výrazně delegitimizovala celou oblast studia. Vedle těchto absolutizujících teorií ale existují i jiní autoři (Caroll Quigley, Joseph Tainter), kteří sice chápou samotné téma jako legitimní, ale jejich pojmová základna vychází z ekonomie a sociologie, snaží se téma přesněji vymezit. Zároveň výrazně omezují kulturní a morální rozměr práce. I přes odlišný přístup mají oba směry mnoho společného – chápou kolaps jako endogenní jev, který je nějak naprogramovaný do samotné struktury společností, domnívají se často, že je úpadek cyklický a spojují ho s patologickými společenskými jevy (dekadencí). Některé materiálně-sociologické teorie dokonce přímo navazují na autory z druhého směru. Tato práce se snaží zodpovědět dvě otázky. Za prvé, jsou nové teorie skutečně vědečtější než ty klasické, nebo jde pouze o změnu terminologie, která zakrývá stále tentýž historicismus, nebo zde dochází k vývoji směrem k vědeckému zkoumání tématu? Za druhé, je možné najít pojmový most mezi spirituálními a materialisticko-sociologickými teoriemi, který by nezanedbával hodnotově nabité aspekty spirituálních teorií? V práci nejprve představuji několik vybraných klasiků obou směrů a ukazuji jejich myšlenková východiska a implicitní předpoklady. Poté v několika kapitolách vytvářím společný pojmový rámec, který umožňuje přemostit oba typy teorií. Následně se věnuji tématu historicismu a představuji několik nejnovějších teorií z materiálně-sociologického proudu a snažím se ukázat, že celé „paradigma zániku“ je možné alespoň v kontextu dvacátého a dvacátého prvního století možné chápat jako postupný vývoj ke konceptuálnímu zpřesnění, přičemž v současnosti začíná formulace testovatelných hypotéz a první skutečně vědecké teorie.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis deals with the decline of civilizations. Decline of civilizations is a topic that continues to come up in philosophy of history. Works connected to this field (Decline of the West by O. Spengler, A Study of History by A. Toynbee) are often characterized by their moralistic tone, a fatalistic, cyclical conception of human history as an immutable historical law, and an almost mystical focus on the spiritual dimension of the civilization. They also serve a political purpose and are employed in the defense of a conservative political viewpoint. These characteristics of the classical decline theories were criticised by Popper as historicism. His criticism was effective in delegitimising the entire field of study. However, there is also a different school of thought – some authors (Caroll Quigley, Joseph Tainter) consider decline of civilizations a legitimate field of study, but their conceptual base is firmly rooted in economics and social science. They attempt to avoid the vagueness of the classical authors and define their concepts precisely, while limiting their field of study to material and social factors, mostly ignoring the cultural and moral dimensions of the topic. Even though the respective approaches of these two groups are very different, they also share key similarities – they conceive of the collapse of civilizations as an endogenous phenomenon that somehow arises out of the structure of the civilization itself, often think that collapse is cyclical and associated with social pathologies (decadence). Some of these materialistic-sociological theories are even written as a direct continuation of previous authors from the other school of thought. This thesis attempts to answer two questions. First, are the newer theories really more scientific than the classics, or is the only real difference a change of terminology covering the same old historicism – is there an evolution towards more scientific approach? Second, is it possible to find a conceptual bridge between spiritual and materialist-sociological theories that would not ignore the role of culture and the value-ladden aspects of spiritual theories? In this thesis, I first introduce several selected authors of both schools of thought and show their main standpoints and implicit assumptions. In the next several chapters, I build up a common conceptual framework that allows to bridge both types of theories. Then I turn my attention to the topic of historicism and present several contemporary theories from the materialist-sociological school of thought and attempt to show that the “decline paradigm” can be thought of as undergoing an evolution towards more precise formulation of concepts and is currently starting to formulate first testable hypotheses and first actual scientific theories.
