The Roman Empire as the International System: the Transformation and Functioning of a System During the Empire Era and Its Subsequent Fall

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vnitřním a vnějším systémem římského impéria. Zkoumá formování vnitřní struktury a mezinárodní pozice římského státu během éry císařství. Mým cílem je analyzovat římskou říši jako svébytný mezinárodní systém. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou část, kde představím koncepty mezinárodních systémů, hegemonie, impérií a modelů římsko-barbarských vztahů; a na praktickou část, kde budu demonstrovat fungování římské říše jako systému v období prosperity a během období úpadku a pádu. Teoretická část zahrnuje koncepty mezinárodních systémů, především koncepty starověkých mezinárodních systémů od Buzana a Littlea, které jsou doplněny dalšími pohledy na problematiku mezinárodních systémů. Tato část také pojednává o konceptech impérií z prací od Motyla, Doylea a Galtunga a také o otázce hegemonie. Pro porozumění vztahů mezi římskou říší a germánskými kmeny a pro porozumění mezinárodní pozice impéria se zaměřuji na modely římské správy a její chování na germánském území. Praktická část zkoumá římskou říši a její úspěchy a neúspěchy během dvou období, principátu a dominátu. Římské impérium bylo nejmocnější a nejmohutnější systém a státní útvar starověku. Impérium se stalo hegemonem a významným mezinárodním aktérem díky vyspělému politickému systému, ekonomice, společnosti a technologiím. Všechny tyto faktory se měnily v průběhu času a formovaly impérium a jejich následný úpadek způsobil úpadek a pád římské říše. Hlavním cílem je ukázat, jak a proč se římská říše stala mocným systémem vnitřně i z vnějšku a jaké byly důvody jejího úpadku a pádu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the internal and external systems of the Roman Empire. The thesis researches the formation of internal structure and international position of the Roman State during the imperial era. My goal is to explore the Roman Empire as a distinctive international system. The paper is divided into a theoretical part, where I introduce concepts of the international system, hegemony, empires and models of Rome-barbarian relations; and into a practical part where I demonstrate the workings of the Roman Empire as a system during the period of prosperity and during the era of decline and fall. The theoretical part includes concepts of international systems, especially the concepts of ancient and classical international systems of Buzan and Little. These concepts are complemented with additional views on the issue of international systems. This part also deals with the concepts of empire through the works of Motyl, Doyle and Galtung and also with the issue of hegemony. In order to understand relations between the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribes, and to gain an insight into the international position of Empire, I am focusing on models of the Roman administration and its behaviour on Germanic territory. The practical part explores the Roman Empire and its successes and failures during two eras of imperial polity, the Principate and the Dominate. The Roman Empire was the most powerful and the most massive system and a state formation of ancient times. The Empire became the hegemon and a significant international player thanks to its advanced political system, economy, society and technology. All these factors were changing over time and shaping the Empire and their subsequent decline resulted in a decay of the Roman Empire. The main aim is to show how and why the Roman Empire became the powerful system from within as well as internationally, and what were the reasons for its decline and fall.
