Personal Is Political: The Art of Motherhood

Abstract:

Personal Is Political: The Art of Motherhood The paper is focused on the question of artistic reflection of motherhood in work by Czech and Slovak visual artists. Specifically, we will focus on approaches, which with motherhood shapes topics, motives and questions, that the artists adress and how they formulate the experience of motherhood in their work. In the first part of the paper we will focus on representation of motherhood in art history, as well as explain its gender context. Part of the work will focus on international artists dealing with the subject of motherhood. We will compare their approach with the work by Slovak and Czech artists. The main focus of our exploration will be various forms in which motherhood shapes the artwork of female artists. The paper will aim to adress the relation of two types of female creativity - procreation and artistic production.

Abstract:

Osobné je politické: Umenie byť matkou Práce je zaměřena na reflexi mateřství v tvorbě současných českých a slovenských výtvarných umělkyň. Sleduje, jak mateřství ovlivňuje náměty, témata a otázky, které umělkyně zpracovávají. V úvodní části práce krátce objasníme zobrazovaní mateřství v historii umění a přiblížíme také jeho genderový kontext. Budeme se také věnovat zahraničním umělkyním, které se tématem mateřství zaobírají. Jejich přístupy pak srovnáme s obdobně orientovanou tvorbou, která vzniká v Česku a na Slovensku. Těžištěm výzkumu jsou podoby, kterými se mateřství odráží v samotných dílech umělkyň v Čechách a na Slovensku. Práce tak bude hledat odpovědi na vztah dvou spojitých podob tvůrčí činnosti u žen: jako spolutvůrkyň nového života i jako autorek uměleckých děl.
