Determining the economic costs and benefits of migration from the perspective of the sending and receiving nations

Abstract:

Závěry práce dokazují, že mezinárodní migrace hraje důležitou roli ve vývoji globální ekonomiky. Vysílající i přijímající země mohou čerpat výhody z mezinárodních migračních toků nebo mohou být ovlivněny jejich negativními aspekty. Jeden z nejoblíbenějších důvodů zahraniční migrace je hledání lepších pracovních míst, hospodářských a sociálních podmínek. Migrace z méně do více rozvinutých zemí ve vyhledávání práce je běžné. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo zhodnotit dopad migrace pracovních migrací z Ruska do České republiky na ekonomiky vybraných zemí provedením průzkumu mezi ruskými pracovními migranty žijícími v České republice. Autor dospěl k závěru, že hlavními přínosy pro Rusko jsou snížená nezaměstnanost a menší sociální zátěž akumulací možného reinvestičního kapitálu a peněžních převodu ze zahraničí, zatímco hlavní náklady zahrnují tzv. „odliv mozků“ a ztrátu investovaných prostředků ve vzdělání. Hlavními výhodami pro Českou republiku jsou rostoucí konkurence mezi pracovní silou a příležitosti k posílení ekonomického růstu, přičemž hlavní nevýhodou je snížení volných pracovních míst pro místní obyvatelstvo a zvýšení sociální zátěže.

Abstract:

The findings of the thesis testify that international migration plays an important role in the development of the global economy. Both sending and receiving nations can draw benefits from international migration flows or can be affected by their negative aspects. One of the most popular reasons for foreign migration is the search for better jobs, economic and social conditions. Migration from less to more developed states in search for work is common. The primary objective of this thesis was to measure the impact of labour migration flow from Russia to Czech Republic on the economies of the chosen countries by conducting a survey among Russian labour migrants residing in Czech Republic. The author concludes that the main benefits for Russia are the decreased unemployment and smaller social burden, as well as the accumulation of possible reinvestment capital and remittances from abroad, while the main costs include the so-called “brain drain” and loss of funds invested in education. For the Czech Republic, the main advantages are the growing competition among labour force and the opportunities to boost economic growth, while the main disadvantage include the decreased vacancies for the local population and increased social burden.
