Adapting Zombies: from Max Brooks' World War Z to Brad Pitt's Blockbuster

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce představuje vývoj estetiky zombie podžánru hororových filmů a poté se zaměřuje na významné změny ve vyprávění, ale i konceptů provedených za účelem adaptovat jednu z mála literárních položek v zombii podžánru Světovou Válku Z (2006) od Maxe Brookse do podoby filmového trháku Světová Válka Z (2013) od režiséra Marcem Fosterem, v produkci a v hlavní roli Bradem Pittem. Z hlediska vyprávění se příběh mění z roztříštěného vyprávění ve formě rozhovorů posbíraných kolem celého světa na lineární zážitek soustředěný okolo hrdinské hlavní postavy a její rodiny. Z hlediska konceptuálních vlastností jsou nejvíce významné věci agresivita a rychlost zombií. Zombii v knize se pohybují pomalu, ale zombií ve filmu jsou plní vzteku a sprintují. Tyhle změny zrychlují tempo příběhu a zcela mění hororový zážitek, což má za následek odlišný prožitek oproti originální knize.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis introduces the development of the horror film zombie subgenre aesthetics and then focuses on the significant changes, in the narrative form but also conceptual features, done in order to adapt one of the few literary entries in the zombie subgenre World War Z (2006) by Max Brooks into a blockbuster film World War Z (2013) directed by Marc Foster, produced and starring Brad Pitt. In terms of narrative form, the story shifts from a fragmented story in the form of interviews collected around the globe to a more linear experience centred around one heroic protagonist and his family. In terms of conceptual features, the most prominent changes are the speed and aggressivity of the zombies. Zombies in the book move sluggishly, but zombies in the movie are rage-filled, and sprinting. These changes speed up the pace of the story and change the horror experience entirely, which results in the film being a different experience for the audience than the original book.
