Diplomová práce zkoumá podíl amerických umělců židovského původu na vývoji americké populární hudby v první polovině dvacátého století. Zaměřuje se na čtyři významné osobnosti období Tin Pan Alley a následující éry swingové hudby třicátých a raných čtyřicátých let. Úvodní část pojednává o autoru-textaři Irvingu Berlinovi a jeho podílu na vývoji americké populární písně. Druhá část sdílí osudy zpěváka a baviče Ala Jolsona a skladatele George Gershwina a zkoumá jejich vztah k afroamerické hudební tradici. Závěrečná část si klade za cíl zhodnotit přínos swingového kapelníka Bennyho Goodmana jako propagátora jazzové hudby.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis explores the contribution of Jewish-American artists to the development of American popular music in the first half of the twentieth century. It focuses on four prominent figures of Tin Pan Alley and the subsequent Swing Era of the 1930s and early 1940s. The introductory part discusses songwriter-lyricist Irving Berlin and his contribution to the development of the American popular song. The second part shares the life stories of singer-entertainer Al Jolson and composer George Gershwin and examines their attitudes towards the African American musical tradition. The final part aims to evaluate the contribution of Swing Era bandleader Benny Goodman as a promoter of jazz music.
