Structural analysis of a system of particles by methods of computational geometry

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou strukturních vlastností částicových systémů s využitím metod počítačové geometrie. Tyto metody nám umožňují odhalit nejen počet objektů ve zkoumaném systému, ale také jejich tvar, díky čemuž je možné sledovat i další geometrické vlastnosti těchto objektů. Dále nám tyto metody nabízejí možnost identifikovat body, které tvoří hranici jednotlivých objektů. Příkladem je fázové rozhraní, které vykazuje odlišné vlastnosti a chování oproti fázím, které odděluje, což představuje důležitý prvek pro sledování chování systému za různých podmínek. Z tohoto důvodu je třeba znát jeho vlastnosti jak pro vědecké účely, tak pro průmyslové využití. Důležité též může být sledování snižování vlivu okolí na chování tekutiny v dalších molekulárních vrstvách. \par V rámci této práce byly vyvinuty dvě odlišné metody, které nám umožňují získat komplexní informace o studovaném systému, a to pouze na základě jednoduchého geometrického kritéria. Tyto metody jsou prezentovány na několika relevantních fyzikálních systémech. Jedná se o systém směsi argonu a methanu, kde je sledováno procentuální zastoupení jednotlivých složek směsi v různých vrstvách, dále o systém argonových nanokapek na modelové podložce, u nichž je měřen kontaktní úhel bez potřeby řešení modifikované Youngovy rovnice, dále o systém míchaných granulárních systémů, u nichž je určena hustota systému a charakterizována jedinou číselnou hodnotou deformace hladiny, a nakonec voda v silném elektrickém poli, v němž je studována orientace dipólových momentů molekul v jednotlivých molekulárních vrstvách. Metody založené na Delaunayově triangulaci se ukázaly být ve všech uvedených aplikacích jako funkční a užitečné, přičemž jejich jedinou nevýhodou je implementační a výpočetní náročnost. Oproti nim metody založené na struktuře octree musí v principu poskytovat hrubší odhady měření výměnou za snazší implementaci a nižší výpočetní náročnost. Ve většině aplikací jsou přesto výsledky srovnatelné.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on analysis of structural features of physical systems by using methods based on principles of computational geometry. These methods allow us to reveal the number of objects in our system, but also their shape, which helps to study their geometrical features. In addition, this methods help to identify points creating the boundary of studied objects. This way is suitable for phase boundary, which has its behaviour different from two original phases. This fact is an important feature for predicting the behaviour of the system under different circumstances. For this reason, there is need to know these features for scientific purposes and the industrial usage. The decreasing effect of external forces on the fluid behaviour in the lower molecular layers is another important filed to study. Therefore, within this thesis two different methods were developed to obtain complex information about studied system based only on simple geometric criterion. These methods are presented on several physically relevant systems. The first one describes mixture of argon and methane, where percentages of single components were evaluated in different layers of the system. The other system is the system of argon nano-droplets on the model substrate, our methods are used to quantify the contact angle in a geometric way to avoid the modified Young's equation. Another application for these methods consists in evaluating the mixing of granular material, where the density is determined by numerical value of the layer deformation. The last evaluated system is the model of water in a strong electric field, where the oriententation of dipole moment of molecules is observed in the individual molecular layers. Methods based on Delaunay triangulation have proved themselves as functional and useful for all presented applications. Their only disadvantages are the implementational and computational demands. On the other hand Octree based methods supply guesstimates of results in order to work under easier implementation and lower computational demands. Despite the differences, the results are almost similar for most of the applications.
