Abstract:

This B.A. Major Thesis discusses the use of English and Creole by authors of Afro-Caribbean origin agaist the background of colonial history and post-colonial debate. Main topics are: orality of the Afro-Caribbean literature, code-mixing and code-switching between Creole and British English. Other topics are: Social and linguistic attitudes towards the use of Creole, emigration and the exile, dub poetry. Authors discussed in the thesis: Wilson Harris, Linton Kwesi Johnson, David Dabydeen, George Lamming, Samuel Selvon.
