Echoes with Abkhazia : Memory, Identity, and Ontological Security in Postwar Georgia

Abstract:

The 1992-1993 Georgian-Abkhaz conflict has left a lasting legacy of identity fragmentation, silence, and eviction. More than thirty years later, about 250,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) from Abkhazia remain between administrative normality and emotional exile. Through this study, the attention will shift back toward memory as a lived reality to illustrate how perceptions of displacement and belonging have grown from the 1990s to today. Moreover, based on ontological security and memory studies within qualitative case study, the thesis examines how IDPs actively reestablish meaning, identity, and belonging through narratives that both contradict and uphold prevailing perceptions of the conflict.
