The role of therapy in the process of desistance in violent offenders

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá pohledem pachatelů násilné trestné činnosti a terapeutů na to, jakým způsobem účast v psychoterapeutickém programu přispívá k procesu ukončování kriminální kariéry (desistance). Cílem výzkumu je získat vhled do toho, k jakým změnám u násilných pachatelů v průběhu psychoterapie dochází a jaké aspekty v terapii i mimo ni jsou vnímány jako pomáhající a bránící těmto změnám. Úvodní kapitoly shrnují dosavadní zjištění týkající se procesu desistance a charakteristik efektivních terapeutických intervencí pro pachatele trestných činů. Ačkoliv spolu tato výzkumná témata úzce souvisejí, představují dva oddělené směry vědeckého zájmu. Tato práce se proto pokouší o jejich propojení. Výzkumný soubor tvoří osm odsouzených mužů a tři terapeuti, s nimiž byly provedeny polostrukturované rozhovory. Získaná data byla analyzována pomocí metody tematické analýzy. Zjištění naznačují, že u odsouzených dochází k mnoha změnám na osobní i vztahové úrovni a že proces změny je ovlivňován rozmanitými terapeutickými i mimoterapeutickými faktory. Dále srovnávají perspektivu odsouzených a terapeutů a ukazují, v čem se jejich pohledy shodují a v čem liší. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu dosavadních studií a na jejich základě jsou navržena doporučení pro další výzkum a praxi.

Abstract:

This study explores how participation in a psychotherapeutic programme contributes to the process of desistance from the perspective of violent offenders and therapists. The aim of this research is to gain insight into the changes that occur during psychotherapy and which helpful and hindering factors affect this process of change. The introduction summarizes present research findings regarding the process of desistance and the characteristics of effective therapeutic interventions with offenders. Despite the fact that these research fields are closely related, they represent two separate domains of scientific interest. Therefore this work attempts to make connections between them. The research sample includes eight convicted men and three therapists. The data obtained from semi-structured interviews with these participants were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings indicate that therapy leads to both personal and interpersonal changes in violent offenders and that the process of change is influenced by various therapeutic and extra-therapeutic factors. The perspectives of convicted men and therapists are compared and the similarities and differences in their views are described. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies and both research and practical implications are suggested.
