Abstract:

Diplomová práce Dystopian Worlds in Young Adult Fiction (Distopické světy v literature pro mládež) analyzuje čtyři díla ze současné literatury pro mládež: trilogii The Hunger Games (Hladové hry) od Suzanee Collinsové, trilogii Divergent (Divergence) of Veronicy Rothové, trilogii The Maze Runner (Labyrint) od Jamese Dashnera, a román The Giver (Dárce) Lois Lowrové. Romány psané dospělými, ale určené mladým čtenářům mají schopnost – a jsou tak rovněž využívány – ovlivnit čtenáře a rozšířit jejich pohled na svět. Dystopická fikce má navíc schopnost poskytnout nový uhel pohledu na koncepty, již se zdají přirozené v běžném a každodenním světe. Tato diplomová práce se soustředí na to, jak analyzované knihy prezentují média a informace, jejich manipulaci, a jejich využívaní ke kontrole obyvatelstva. Postavy v těchto dílech jsou nuceny k prohlédnutí téhle manipulací a k osvobození se od nich, ale rovněž jsou nuceny naučit se je samy využívat. Hrdinové analyzovaných knih odhalují pravdu a využívají ji k veřejným aktem odporu. Autoři těchto knih podporují hledání, sdílení, a zachovávaní informací a vědomostí. Specifickou skupinu informací tvoří historie, a taktéž vzpomínky a paměť. Dystopické světy využívají oficiální historie k zachování svého systému, a mnoho historie je ztraceno. Hrdinové těchto knih znovu-objevují historii a snaží se ji uchovat. Tito díla vedou čtenáře k analýz pozadí informací s nimiž se setkávají, ale i k vědomí jejich vlastního hlasu a k důležitostí historie a informací při rozhodování o budoucnosti.

Abstract:

The thesis Dystopian Worlds in Young Adult Fiction analyzes four works of contemporary dystopian Young Adult Fiction. These are The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, The Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, The Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner, and The Giver by Lois Lowry. The novels written by adults and aimed at young readers have the ability, and the function, to influence the readers and to teach him or her about new concepts and to broaden his or her perspective, and that the dystopian fiction has the ability to make the reader see what they have come to perceive natural from a new perspective. This thesis discusses how the works of fiction examined focus on the information, media, and its manipulation as the source of power and control. The characters portrayed in the novels have to learn to recognize and resist this manipulation, and to search for reliable information. They also have to learn how to use information themselves in acts of public rebellion. The authors encourage the uncovering, revealing, and sharing of the information and knowledge. A specific category of information in the dystopian worlds is history, related to and conflated with memory. In the dystopian worlds portrayed by the authors of the novels discussed, official versions of history are used in order to support the existing system, and often history from the time before the establishment is abandoned. The characters reveal the true history and aim to preserve it. The thesis argues that these novels encourage the reader to be conscious of the agenda behind the information they receive as well as of their own voice, and they also emphasize the importance of history and information in the decision-making process.
