History and Present Status of Scottish Gaelic

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore Scottish Gaelic, the native language to Scotland. In the first part, the origin of the language is outlined as well as its development. In addition, there is stated the peak of Scottish Gaelic, its decline, and the impact of the language on the culture and history of Scotland. Furthermore, the thesis specifies countries, in which Scottish Gaelic is still spoken, the status of the language and the numbers of its speakers which were taken from governmental censuses. Last but not least, the thesis refers to the steps that are being made in order to preserve Scottish Gaelic along with addressed views of Gaelic speakers on the current status of the language.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá skotskou gaelštinou jakožto původním jazykem Skotska. V první části se práce snaží popsat vznik tohoho jazyka a jeho vývoj. Dále je vymezena doba, kdy dosáhla gaelština svého vrcholu, úpadku a její dopad na skotskou kulturu a historii. Mimo jiné, práce také specifukuje oblasti, ve kterých je gaelšina stále užívána, její současnou pozici a počet mluvčích podle soupisů obyvatelstva. V neposlední řadě se práce věnuje popisu kroků, které jsou podnikány k zachování tohoto jazyka a přibližuje pohledy mluvčích na současnou pozici gaelštiny.
