A Brief Look at Environmental Issues in Dystopian Literature by Three Generations

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl poskytnout nezainteresovanému čitateli krátký náhled do problematiky životního prostředí pomocí tří dystopických literárních publikací. Autorka práce si vybrala autory tří různých generací dvacátého století – Aldous Huxley (Brave New World), Ray Bradbury (The Martian Chronicles), a Margaret Atwood (Oryx and Crake). Závěrečná práce je rozdělena do teoretické a více praktické části. První tvoří rychlá definice základních pojmů, se kterými autor dále pracuje, jako je utopie, dystopie, literární ekokritika. Tyto informace jsou dále doplněny údaji o historii a užším rozčlenění žánru dystopické literatury. Tento faktografický základ je pro pochopení druhé poloviny práce kritický. Následující část tvoří samotná analýza děl, která nejen ve vybraných dílech vyhledává poznámky o environmentální problematice, ale pokouší se i o úvahu za jednotlivými příklady. Autor se snaží tyto situace začlenit do kontextu v rámci doby i spisovatele, a současně dokázat, že dystopická literatura může sloužit i jako zrcadlo aktuálního ekologické stavu planety.

Abstract:

The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to offer a reader a quick look into environmental issues through three dystopian literary publications. The author of the thesis chose the authors of three different generations of the 20th century - Aldous Huxley and his Brave New World, Ray Bradbury and his The Martian Chronicles, and finally Margaret Atwood and Oryx and Crake. The final thesis is divided into a theoretical and a more practical part. The first one consists of a short definition of basic terms, which are later used - utopia, dystopia, and literary ecocriticism. These pieces of information are further completed with the history and some of the subgenres of dystopian literature. The factual background is critical to fully comprehend the thesis. The second part deals with the analysis of selected books. Not only it locates excerpts concerning environmental issues, but it also attempts to ponder about the findings. The author tries to put these situations into the context of time and their authors. At the same time, she tries to prove the fact that dystopian literature can indeed serve as a mirror of an actual state of environment.
