Fayum portraits: garment and hairstyle on the women portraits

Abstract:

In the first part of my master´s degree diploma work I try to penetrate more closely into issue of Fayum mummy portraits through explanation of social and religious context of a given period. An explanation of conditions and environment, in which they were created, is subject to individual locations that were affecting an artistic style of performance of individual portraits to a great extent. Due to this reason I state the most important five locations of the most frequent occurrence of paintings – with explanation of historical background of their development. As they are, in particular, the works being derived from Hellenistic tradition of painting, I continue with a short excursion about Greek painting legacy, portraits from Roman period and an article about the artists from Fayum. In term of shape it is important to acquaint yourself with a technique of tempera and encaustic, along with basic recognition of base material, which the mummy portraits were created from. Theoretical part is finished by chapter about Roman clothing and hairstyle, which I also focus on in the following part of my work. The most extensive part of the text is made up of a catalogue consisting of fifty items investigating the female mummy portraits in term of different time period of their production. Each of these items includes information on place of discovery, current location, dimensions, used material / technique, condition of preservation, clothing, hairstyle, dating and mainly it includes the description of the subject itself in detail. The last part is represented by summary of my work, where, based on data obtained from previous two parts, I seek to make consistent idea and to understand basic issue of Fayum mummy portraits.

Abstract:

V prvej časti mojej magisterskej diplomovej práce sa pokúšam o bližšie preniknutie do problematiky Fajjúmských múmiových portrétov prostredníctvom objasnenia spoločenského a náboženského kontextu daného obdobia. Ozrejmenie podmienok a prostredia v ktorom vznikali je podmienené jednotlivými lokalitami, ktoré do značnej miery ovplyvňovali umelecký štýl prevedenia jednotlivých portrétov. Z tohto dôvodu uvádzam päť najdôležitejších miest najčastejšieho výskytu obrazov - s ozrejmením historického pozadia ich vývoja. Keďže sa jedná predovšetkým o diela odvodené od helenistickej tradície maľby, pokračujem krátkym exkurzom o gréckom obrazovom dedičstve, portrétoch z rímskych čias a staťou o umelcoch z Fajjúmu. Z hľadiska formy je dôležité oboznámiť sa s technikou tempery a enkaustiky, spolu so základným rozlíšením podkladového materiálu, z ktorého boli múmiové portréty vytvorené. Teoretický celok uzatvára kapitola o rímskom odeve a účesoch, na ktoré sa tiež zameriavam v nasledujúcej časti mojej práce. Najrozsiahlejšiu časť textu tvorí katalóg, pozostávajúci z päťdesiatich položiek, skúmajúcich ženské múmiové portréty z rôzneho časového úseku ich produkcie. Každá z týchto položiek obsahuje informáciu o mieste nálezu, súčasnom umiestnení, rozmeroch, použitom materiály/technike, stave zachovania, odeve, účese, datovaní a predovšetkým zahŕňa podrobný opis samotného subjektu. Poslednú časť predstavuje zhrnutie mojej práce, v ktorom sa na základe získaných údajov z predchádzajúcich dvoch celkov snažím o celistvú predstavu a pochopenie základnej problematiky Fajjúmských múmiových portrétov.
