Quality as the Factor of Enterprise Competitiveness

Abstract:

Dissertation on the theme "Quality as a factor of enterprise competitiveness" is aimed to explore the relationship between two important concepts related to enterprise, concept of quality and enterprise competitiveness. These concepts, based on the literature review, are further characterized and specified to the form for analysis of the relationship between the abovementioned concepts using enterprises data survey. Quality is thus conceived as the enterprise manager’s quality, particularly in the form of the ability to evaluate selected aspects of reality. Attention is devoted to the manager’s ability as a part of a manager’s quality. Competitiveness of enterprises, on the other hand, is conceived through corporate performance, as an expression of its competitiveness. It relies on the definition of competitiveness as the company's ability to succeed in the competition with its competitors at the market. This approach corresponds to perspective of the enterprise through its performance, since it is possible to consider an enterprise as competitive if it is able to achieve better corporate performance results. Relationship between quality and enterprise competitiveness thus can be characterized as an analysis of the relation between manager’s skill to evaluate selected aspects of reality and corporate performance. That relationship is examined based on the results of the survey, which was carried out during the research with the participation of members of the Department of Corporate Economy Faculty of Economics and Administration, Masaryk University. Specifically, surveys were conducted among the small and medium-sized construction enterprises operating within the South Moravian Region and food-processing enterprises operating in whole Czech Republic. Managers of construction enterprises as respondents of the questionnaire survey among the construction enterprises were asked to evaluate many areas of business practice. For the purpose of this dissertation information about the development evaluation of the selected financial indicators were used, namely the development of sales and earnings, as well as evaluation of internal and external factors affecting surveyed enterprises. Information of the selected financial indicators of the survey questionnaire in comparison with information from the financial statements was used for proof of dissertation concept. It allowed evaluating primary relations within the concept of dissertation. Internal and external factors were used to supplement the primary analysis of relationship providing a deeper understanding of the abilities of the company manager, as part of the quality manager. Respondents in the questionnaire survey among the food-processing enterprises were managers of surveyed enterprises as well as consumers of products of surveyed enterprises. Only the information contributed to verification of the relationship of evaluation of selected aspects of reality according to the groups of respondents in juxtaposition were used for further analyses and for the verification of the concept of dissertation. The relationship analyses thus directly contribute to fulfilling the aim of a dissertation. Construction enterprises and food-processing enterprises were classified into categories according to the INFA methodology, as the enterprises creating value, profit-making enterprises and loss-making enterprises. Thus it was possible to carry out individual analyzes according to that classification. The results thus provide information on the diversity of managers’ skills for enterprises in different categories, depending on enterprise performance. So it is possible to identify links between manager’s quality and enterprise competitiveness. Dissertation contributes to the development of the theory of business economics and business practice through its atypical approach to quality and its links to the enterprise competitiveness so thus provide new perspectives on the issue.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca na tému „Kvalita jako faktor konkurenceschopnosti podniku“ je zameraná na skúmanie vzťahu medzi dvoma významnými pojmami spojenými s podnikom, pojmami kvality a konkurencieschopnosti podniku. Prístup k týmto pojmom je na základe predloženej literárnej rešerše bližšie charakterizovaný a konkretizovaný do podoby pre vlastnú analýzu väzby medzi oboma uvedenými pojmami na súboroch skúmaných podnikov. Kvalita je tak pojatá ako kvalita manažéra podniku, v konkrétnej podobe jeho schopnosti hodnotiť vybrané aspekty reality. Tejto schopnosti manažéra, ako súčasti kvality manažéra, je tak venovaná pozornosť. Konkurencieschopnosť podniku, na druhej strane, je pojatá prostredníctvom výkonnosti podniku, ako prejavu jeho konkurencieschopnosti. Pritom je vychádzané z definície konkurencieschopnosti ako schopnosti podniku uspieť v konkurenčnom boji so svojimi konkurentmi. Toto pojatie tak korešponduje s hodnotením podniku prostredníctvom jeho výkonnosti, nakoľko je tak možné za konkurencieschopný podnik považovať taký podnik, ktorý je v porovnaní so svojimi konkurentmi výkonnejší. Skúmaný vzťah medzi kvalitou a konkurencieschopnosťou podniku je tak možné charakterizovať ako analýzu väzby medzi schopnosťou manažéra hodnotiť vybrané aspekty reality a výkonnosťou podniku. Uvedený vzťah je skúmaný na základe výsledkov dotazníkových šetrení, ktoré boli uskutočnené v rámci výskumov, na ktorých participovali členovia katedry podnikového hospodárstva Ekonomicko-správnej fakulty Masarykovej univerzity. Konkrétne sa jednalo o malé a stredné stavebné podniky pôsobiace v rámci Juhomoravského kraja a potravinárske podniky v rámci celej Českej republiky. Pri dotazníkovom šetrení na stavebných podnikoch boli respondenti, manažéri týchto podnikov, požiadaní o hodnotenie mnohých oblastí podnikovej praxe, z ktorých boli pre potreby dizertačnej práce získané informácie o hodnotení vybraných finančných ukazovateľov, konkrétne vývoj obratu a zisku, ako aj hodnotenia interných a externých faktorov pôsobiacich na oslovené podniky. Pre overenie konceptu dizertačnej práce boli primárne využité informácie o hodnotení vybraných finančných ukazovateľov z dotazníkového šetrenia a tieto boli porovnávané s informáciami z účtovných závierok. Bolo tak možné hodnotiť primárnu väzbu v rámci skúmaného konceptu. Interné a externé faktory boli využité pre doplnenie tejto primárnej analýzy väzby, poskytujúce hlbšie pochopenie schopností manažéra podniku, ako súčasti kvality manažéra. Pri dotazníkovom šetrení potravinárskych podnikov boli respondentmi manažéri oslovených podnikov, tak aj spotrebitelia produktov oslovených podnikov. Z týchto dotazníkových šetrení boli pre potreby dizertačnej práce využité tie informácie, ktoré dovoľovali vzájomné porovnanie hodnotení respondentmi, teda overenie konceptu dizertačnej práce. Výsledky vzájomnej analýzy tak priamo prispievali k naplneniu cieľa dizertačnej práce. Nakoľko boli stavebné podniky i potravinárske podniky roztriedené do kategórií podľa metodiky INFA, na podniky tvoriace hodnotu, podniky ziskové a podniky stratové, bolo možné jednotlivé analýzy uskutočniť aj v závislosti od tohto triedenia. Výsledky tak poskytujú informácie o rozdielnosti schopností manažérov podnikov v jednotlivých kategóriách v závislosti od výkonnosti podnikov. Je tak možné identifikovať väzbu medzi kvalitou manažérov a konkurencieschopnosťou podnikov, ktoré títo manažéri riadia. Dizertačná práca tak prispieva k rozvoju teórie podnikového hospodárstva a podnikovej praxe svojim netypickým prístupom ku kvalite a jej väzby na konkurencieschopnosť podniku a poskytuje tak nový pohľad na danú problematiku.
