The research of ancient glass artefacts

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je orientována na studium skleněných výrobků z doby bronzové, laténské a stěhování národů. Ke zpracování byly získány tři soubory archeologických skel, dva z oblasti jižní Moravy (Kyjov a několik lokalit na Hodonínsku a Kyjovsku) a jeden ze středního Slovenska. Uvedené soubory poskytly širokou škálu tvarových i technologických variant skleněných výrobků. Ze získaných dat byly stanoveny různé technologické aspekty výroby, např. základní typy surovin, jejich možná provenience či receptury. V neposlední řadě se zkoumal stav poškození a jeho příčiny, zda bylo sklo atakováno žárem či agresivním prostředím. Vzájemné porovnání různých typů skla umožnilo porovnat vývoj sklářské technologie a poukázat na vyspělost tehdejších mistrů či rozsáhlost dálkového obchodu. K pozorování a analýzám byly využity metody rentgenové fluorescence, rentgenové difrakce, optický mikroskop a elektronový mikroskop s EDS analyzátorem. Stanovené složky byly interpretovány na základě dobových surovinových možností. Soubory zahrnovaly skla popelového i natronového typu, významný podíl skel z Kyjova zaujímal olovnatý typ. Podařilo se určit barvicí prvky a kaliva. Nedílnou součástí práce bylo vyhledání historických souvislostí a případných analogií k jednotlivým souborům, jehož výsledky podpořily zejména provenienční určení.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the study of glassware from the Bronze Age, La Tene period and Migration. The process was realized on three sets of archaeological glass, two of southern Moravia (Kyjov and several locations in the Hodonin and Kyjov districts) and one from central Slovakia. These sets provided a wide range of technological variations and shapes of glassware. The collected data were used for interpretation of different technological aspects of production, such as basic types of raw materials, their provenance and possible recipes. Finally, it was examined the state of damage and its causes, whether the glass was attacked by heat or corrosive environments. Mutual comparison of various types of glass provided particulars about the development of glass technology and highlighted the sophistication and extensiveness of the glassmakers or width of the long distance trade. For the observation and analysis were used following methods: X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscope and electron microscope with EDS analyzer. Identified components were interpreted on the basis of historical raw material sources. The sets included soda ash glass, natron glass and lead glass, which is majority-represented on the location Kyjov. It was possible to determine the colorants and opacifiers. An integral part of the work was to find the historical context and possible analogies to individual sets, the results supported mainly the provenance determination.
