Abstract:

This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of artificial intelligence’s (AI) impact on jobs in Europe. It delves into the nuances of AI’s influence on job polarisation, task replacement, automation, the emergence of new work types, skill demands, and work organisation changes. Utilising various data sources and extensive research literature, the paper offers insights into both the potential risks and opportunities presented by AI technologies. Contrary to popular belief that AI solely leads to job loss, the findings reveal a more complex landscape. AI indeed poses risks but also creates opportunities through task transformation, the emergence of new jobs, and increased demand for digital and analytical skills. Moreover, AI’s effects are not uniform across occupations; they vary based on sectoral characteristics, influencing different industries in distinct ways. Case studies of sectors like agriculture, financial services, manufacturing, and healthcare illustrate this variation. In conclusion, AI is set to be a significant driver of employment changes in Europe, necessitating proactive measures like education, reskilling, and supportive public policies to aid workforce adaptation.
