Archives and collections. From an archive of the artist to the internet database.

Abstract:

Téma diplomové práce je zaměřeno na umělecké archivy a sbírky, konkrétně jejich podoby variující od uměleckých archivů, sebearchivů, až po dnešní internetové databáze. Způsoby archivace uměleckých děl a umělecké sebearchivace prošly během posledních šedesáti let značnými změnami, podmíněnými zejména technologickým vývojem, ale i proměňujícím se politickým klimatem. Práce se zabývá projekty z evropského prostředí, s důrazem zejména na archivní tendence v umění střední a východní Evropy, pohybující se v rozmezí soukromých sbírek až zavedených fungujících institucí. Jedná se o archivy rozvíjející se (zejména ve svých počátcích) na neoficiálních uměleckých scénách jednotlivých zemí a dále umělecké databáze fungující v prostředí internetu. Konkrétně jsou analyzovány výzkumné postupy rumunské umělkyně Lii Perjovschi, archiv slovenského umělce Júliuse Kollera, soukromý archiv brněnského umělce knihaře Jiřího Hynka Kocmana, dále archivy, které fungují (i) v internetovém prostředí, tedy Archiv současného umění a online databáze abART Jiřího Hůly a wikidatabáze Monoskop Dušana Baroka a maďarský umělecký projekt ARTPOOL. Zmíněné projekty jsou zpracovány metodou komparativní analýzy, podloženou v několika případech rozhovory s jejich autory či představiteli institucí, pod jejichž správu mnohé archivy přešly jako součást pozůstalostí. Cílem práce není vytvoření vyčerpávajícího přehledu archivních forem a projektů zaměřených na archivaci a sebearchivaci umělecké tvobry, ale spíše vysledovat proměny společenského kontextu doby jejich vzniku a proměnu významu těchto archivů jako takových. Práce vychází z bohaté literatury věnované otázce archivu obecně, jeho specifickému místu v umělecké praxi, ale i z konkrétních studií věnovaných této problematice.

Abstract:

The topic of the present thesis is focused on art files and collections, particularly their different variations from art files, auto-archives to modern internet databases. The methods of archiving pieces of art and artistic auto-archiving have changed significantly over the past sixty years. These changes were mainly caused by technological development; however the changes of political climate have played a significant role as well. The thesis focuses on European projects, especially on the archiving tendencies in terms of art of Central and Eastern Europe from private collections to established institutions. These are archives that came to existence through unofficial artistic scenes of the individual countries as well as artistic databases on the internet. The research methods of a Romanian artist Lii Perjovschi are analyzed in particular, also the archive of a Slovakian artist Július Koller, private archives of an artist and bookbinder from Brno Jiří Hynek Kocman and archives existing on the internet, i.e. Archives of contemporary art and online database abART by Jiří Hůla, a Wikipedia database Monoskop by Dušan Barok and a Hungarian art project ARTPOOL. The above mentioned projects are analyzed comparatively and are, in some cases, supplemented by interviews with their authors or authorities of the institutions that are in charge of many of those archives on the basis of inheritance. The goal of this work is not to create an exhaustive summary of archiving forms and projects focused on archiving and auto-archiving of art. Its goal is rather to describe the changes within the social context of the time of their creation and the changes of the meaning of those archives as such. The thesis is based on various literary sources dedicated to archives in general as well as their specific role within art and specific studies focusing on this topic.
