Who and How Helps the Elderly: the Role of Family and State in Aging

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá roli rodiny a státu při poskytování pomoci nesoběstačným seniorům. Dělí se na teoretickou a empirickou část, ve druhé pracuje s daty projektu SHARE. Snaží se najít odpovědi na to, kdo poskytuje kolik pomoci, a v jaké formě. Popisuje nejvýznamnější potřeby seniorů, na které se snaží rodina či stát reagovat. Zdůrazňuje nejen důležitost, ale také náročnost poskytování takové péče. Nevynechává ani vztahy mezi opečovávanými a pečovateli, konflikty a obtíže při využívání obou typů služeb. Zabývá se také rolí pečovatele a motivací se jím stát. Dochází ke zjištěním, že nejčastěji poskytují pomoc seniorům jejich rodinní příslušníci. Jde nejčastěji o děti seniorů, v případě možnosti jsou to partneři, případně vnoučata nebo snachy. Převážná většina těchto poskytovatelů pomoci jsou ženy. Nejčastěji poskytují emocionální péči nebo péči v domácnosti. Finanční pomoc se neukázala jako důležitá, tato pomoc plynula častěji od seniorů směrem k dětem. Byl zjištěn pozitivní vztah mezi současným poskytováním pomoci dětem a starým rodičům dospělými dětmi. Dále mezi blízkým bydlištěm seniora a dětí. Vysokoškolsky vzdělané děti poskytovaly pomoci více. S rostoucími potřebami seniorů rostla také pomoc, kterou od dětí obdrželi. Role státu byla důležitá především v poskytování krátkodobých pobytových služeb, kam rodina seniora umisťovala pouze na nejnutnější dobu. Její rozvoj se však zdá být nevyhnutelný, a význam institucionální bude v dalších letech stále větší.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is analyzing the role of family and government when helping non-self-sufficient seniors. It has theoretical and empirical part, in the second part it works with data from the SHARE. The thesis is trying to find answers on who is in role of supplying necessary help and in what quantity and form. The thesis describes the most significant needs of seniors where family and government is trying to react. It is pointing out both importance and difficulty when serving this sort of the care. The thesis also examines relationships and conflicts between carers and their patients as well as difficulties when utilising both care services. It is also concerned about the role and motivation of carers. The thesis concludes the family members as the primary source of senior care. This mainly applies to children or partners (when it was possible), grandchildren or daughters-in-law of those seniors. Majority of those carers are women mainly providing emotional or household care services. Financial help turned out not to be of such importance and was frequently provided from senior side to children. Simultaneous care of adult children when providing help to both children and elder parents was concluded as a positive relationship. More help give children living closer to seniors and university-educated children. When the needs of seniors grew help from children grew, too. Government role was essential primarily in the role of supplying short term senior lodging services to take care of senior for the most necessary time period. Development of this sort of services is unavoidable and is expecting to be on rise in subsequent years.
