Reliance on conscious and unconscious information processing in the Iowa gambling task: The effect of task complexity

Abstrakt: Vědomé nebo nevědomé rozhodování je předmětem mnoha již dříve provedených a komentovaných experimentů. Ty však vzbuzují určité pochybnosti, zda při nich bylo vědomé a nevědomé rozhodování skutečně dobře rozlišeno. Bechara a kol.(1997) vyslovili podporu teorii somatických markerů na základě jednoduché hry zvané Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), která simuluje rozhodování reálného života za pomoci nejistých předpokladů a výsledků. V této úloze musí účastníci vybírat karty z některého ze čtyř balíčků, přičemž každý balíček má odlišné výhry a prohry. Pomocí této úlohy Bechara a kol. zjistili, že si účastníci vybírají z výhodných balíčků, a to i dříve, než rozpoznají výhodnou strategii hry, a proto předpokládá, že jsou pokusné osoby vedeny nevědomým zpracování informací. Cílem této studie bylo přezkoumat, zda zvýšení složitosti pravidel odměňování přiměje účastníky, aby se opět spolehli na nevědomé zpracování informací. V našem experimentu jsme použili dvě různé verze úlohy: původní IGT podle Bechary a kol.(1997) a nově navrženou složitější IGT. Abychom určili, zda jsou účastníci vedeni vědomým nebo nevědomým zpracováním informací, použili jsme dvě metody pro měření vědomí, resp. nevědomí: kvantitavní otázky podle Maia a McClelland (2004), a metodu sázek na právě udělané rozhodnutí (post-decision wagering) podle Persaud a kol. (2007). Na základě kvantitativních otázek jsme zjistili, že přestože účastníci modifikované/složité úlohy IGT neměli vědomou znalost kvantitativních aspektů úlohy, stále jednali výhodně. Podle kvantitativních dotazů úrovně 1 a 2 jako míry vědomé znalosti, účastníci modifikované/komplexní IGT vykázali slabý výkon na obou úrovních, avšak jejich volba balíčků převyšovala míru náhodné volby. Zde se můžeme s jistou opatrností domnívat, že toto zjištění může prokazovat výhodné rozhodování bez vědomé znalosti kvantitativních aspektů úlohy.

Abstract: Conscious or unconscious decision making is a subject of a number of previously performed and commented experiments. These seem to raise certain doubts, whether the conscious and unconscious decision making is really well distinguished Bechara et al. (1997) used to support the Somatic Markers Hypothesis by a simple card game called Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) that simulates a real-life decision-making on a base of uncertainty of premises and outcomes. In this task participants must select a card from one of four presented decks whereas each deck has a different schedule of payment. Using this task, Bechara et al. found that normal participants choose from the advantageous decks, before they knew the advantageous strategy of the game, and therefore suggested that subjects are led by unconscious information processing. The goal of this study was to examine whether increasing the complexity of the IGT pay-off schedule will lead the participants to rely once again on unconscious information processing. In our experiment, we used two different versions of the task: the original IGT by Bechara et al. (1997) and newly designed modified/complex IGT. In order to determine whether the participants were during advantageous decision-making led by conscious or unconscious processing of information, we used two methods for measuring awareness: quantitative questions used by Maia and McClelland (2004) and a method of post-decision wagering used by Persaud et al. (2007). We found according to the quantitative questions, that even though the modified/complex IGT participants had no conscious knowledge about the quantitative aspects of the task, they still behaved advantageously. According to the quantitative questions of level 1 and 2 as a measure of conscious knowledge, the participants in the modified/complex IGT showed poor performance on both levels, but their deck selection was above the chance performance. We can cautiously assume, that this finding might be an evidence for the advantageous decision making without conscious knowledge of the task strategy.
