Psychometric study of the Beck's Depression scale

Abstract:

Úvod: Beckova škála depresivity je populárním screeningovým nástrojem při podezření na přítomnost depresivního onemocnění. Tato práce se zaměřuje na zhodnocení psychometrických charakteristik jejího českého převodu. Metoda: Česká verze Beckovy škály depresivity pro dospělé a Škály deprese Centra pro epidemiologické studie byla administrována 306 respondentům, ve znáhodněném pořadí. Testy byly administrovány online i metodou tužka-papír. Výsledky: Obsahová validita Beckovy škály depresivity pro dospělé je velmi uspokojivá. Vnitřní konzistence škály se rovnala 0,94. Faktorová struktura byla obdobná zahraničním verzím škály. Na vzorku bylo dosaženo senzitivity 0,95 a specifity 0,67. Korelace se Škálou deprese Centra pro epidemiologické studie činila 0,87. Jednotlivé položky i celkový skór byly ovlivněny demografickými charakteristikami jen minimálně. Závěr: Výsledky této studie svědčí pro vysokou obsahovou, diskriminační a souběžnou validitu českého převodu Beckovy škály depresivity. Studie však byla omezena velikostí klinického vzorku a způsobem jeho výběru. Posouzení diskriminační validity by tak mělo být bráno spíše exploračně.

Abstract:

Introduction: Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) is a popular screening instrument when the presence of a depressive disorder is suspected. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Czech version of BDI-II. Method: The Czech version of BDI-II and The Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered to 306 respondents in randomized order. The tests were administered both online and in pen-and-paper form. Results: The content validity of Czech version was satisfactory. Internal consistency of the scale was 0.94. The factor structure was similar to those of other language versions. In this sample, the sensitivity and specifity were 0.95 and 0.67, respectively. The correlation with CES-D was 0.87. Both the total score and individual items were only minimally affected by demographic characteristics. Conclusion: The results of this study argue for high content, discriminatory and concurrent validity of the Czech version of BDI-II. However, the study was limited by the size of its clinical sample. Therefore, the assessment of discriminatory validity should rather be taken as exploratory.
