Carpal Bones in the Context of the Human Skeleton

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the relationships between carpal bones and other measurements of human skeleton arising from phylogenetic, ontogenetic and biomechanical processes. In the theoretical part of the thesis an overview of knowledge about the biomechanical properties of the wrist was created. The aim of the practical part of the thesis was to metrically process carpal bones and to search for relationships of these measurements with each other and with other selected measurements of the human skeleton. Carpal bones of 145 skeletal adult individuals originated from medieval and modern-time burial site at Saint Jacob´s Church in Brno were processed (89 males, 56 females). There were 51 measurements measured on each wrist and their relationship with each other, with the measuremements of other bones of the skeleton and with the estimated body height was evaluated separately for each sex and side of the body. Within the wrist most measurements correlated with each other directly linearly with the highest correlation coefficient values within one bone. Overall, in the female individuals there were recorded higher correlations within the wrist and in both sexes higher correlations were recorded in the left wrists. The largest sex differences in correlations of carpal measurements occurred mostly in os triquetrum, trapezium and trapezoideum. The results suggest that bones localized on the longitudinal axis of the forearm are less sexually dimorphic, which may be related to their important function in transmission of force load put on the wrist. On the femur the vertical diameter of femoral head was the measurement with most numerous (16 – 31 measurements) statistically significant correlations with wrist measurements. In females, the wrist measurements were more often correlated with the the maximal femur length and anteroposterior diameter of femoral diaphysis of the left side than the right side. On the pelvic bone among the observed measurements the post-acetabular ischial length was the measurement with the highest correlations with wrist bones measurements. Body height estimation correlated in most cases with the carpal measurements directly with more statistically significant correlations in males. In both sexes the estimated body height correlated more with the right carpal measurements.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostmi zápěstních kostí s ostatními rozměry lidského skeletu, které vyplývají z fylogenetických, ontogenetických a biomechanických procesů. V teoretické části práce byl vytvořen přehled poznatků o biomechanických vlastnostech zápěstí. Cílem praktické části bylo metricky zpracovat kosti zápěstí a uskutečnit korelační analýzu těchto rozměrů jak mezi sebou, tak i s rozměry na skeletu. Zpracována byla zápěstí 145 skeletů dospělých jedinců, pocházejících ze středověkého a novověkého hřbitova okolo kostela sv. Jakuba v Brně (89 mužů, 56 žen). Na každém zápěstí bylo měřeno 51 rozměrů a zvlášť u každého pohlaví a strany těla byla hodnocena jejich souvislost navzájem a s rozměry jiných kostí skeletu a odhadem výšky postavy. V rámci zápěstí korelovala většina rozměrů mezi sebou přímo lineárně s nejvyššími hodnotami korelačních koeficientů při rozměrech v rámci jedné kosti. Celkově byly u ženských jedinců zaznamenány vyšší korelace rozměrů v rámci zápěstí a u obou pohlaví byly vyšší na levém zápěstí. Největší mezipohlavní rozdíly závislostí rozměrů se vyskytovaly převážně u rozměrů na os triquetrum, trapezium a trapezoideum. Výsledky naznačují, že kosti ležící na podélné ose předloktí jsou méně pohlavně dimorfní, což by mohlo souviset s jejich důležitou funkcí v přenose sil zátěže kladené na zápěstí. Na stehenní kosti nejčastěji (16 – 31 rozměrů) s rozměry zápěstí statisticky významne přímo koreloval svislý průměr hlavice stehenní kosti. U žen s rozměry zápěstí častěji korelovala největší délka stehenní kosti a předozadní průměr diafýzy stehenní kosti levé strany než strany pravé. Na pánevní kosti z pozorovaných rozměrů nejvíc korelovala s rozměry zápěstí post-acetabulární ischiální délka. Odhad výšky postavy jedinců koreloval s rozměry zápěstí převážně přímo, větší počet statisticky významných korelací byl u mužů. U obou pohlaví odhad výšky postavy více koreloval s rozměry pravého zápěstí.
