Human Sacrifices in the Context of the Aztec Solar Cult

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá lidskými oběťmi v kontextu aztéckého slunečního kultu. Snaží se představit jak samotný proces obětování a místo, kde k němu docházelo, tak i vysvětlit, jaké důvody vedly Aztéky k obětování svých zajatců i soukmenovců. Práce je rozdělena na čtyři části. V první kapitole rozebírá samotný aztécký sluneční kult. Představuje jej pomocí jeho dvou hlavních mýtů, které následně hrají důležitou roli v celé práci. Druhá kapitola se zaměřuje na místo, kde se lidské oběti a další veřejné obřady odehrávaly, na Templo Mayor v Tenochtitlánu. Pomocí mýtu, který vypráví o putování Aztéků z mytické krajiny Aztlánu, vysvětluje, proč byl Templo Mayor pro Aztéky tak významný a v čem tkví jeho jedinečnost. Následující část se věnuje přímo dění v tomto Hlavním chrámu. Rozebírá se, kdo směl a kdo nesměl provádět lidské oběti, vysvětluje se pojem ixiptla, a dále, kterým bohům se vlastně lidé obětovali a jakými způsoby. Pro ilustraci uvádí detailněji některé konkrétní obřady. V poslední kapitole propojuje předchozí fakta s úvahami nad podstatou problému lidských obětí v kontextu aztéckého slunečního kultu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the human sacrifices in the context of the Aztec solar cult. It aims to introduce both the sacrifice process itself and where it took place, as well as to explain what reasons made the Aztecs to sacrifice their captives and members of their tribe. The thesis is divided into four parts. In the first chapter it deals with the Aztec solar cult itself. It is introduced with the help of its two main myths, which later on play an important part in the whole thesis. The second chapter is focused on the site where the human sacrifices and other public rituals took place – on Templo Mayor in Tenochtitlan. With the help of the myth, that tells the story about the Aztec journey from the mythy land of Aztlan, explains why Templo Mayor was so important for the Aztecs and where its uniqueness lies. The next part pursues directly the events in this main temple. It deals with who was and who was not allowed to do human sacrifices, explains the term ixiptla and to which gods people did sacrifices and how. By way of illustration it states in more detail some actual ceremonies. In the last chapter it connects the foregoing facts with the reflection about the heart of the matter of the human sacrifices in the context of the Aztec solar cult.
