The Tremendism: Its Resonance in the Works of Camilo José Cela and in the Postwar Spanish Novel within the Context of the 1940s and 1950s (PhD Thesis Proposal)

Abstract:

Athough Tremendism is one of the most peculiar phenomena that appeared on the Spanish cultural scene in the 20th century, it used to be considered a marginal phenomenon. A greater revival of interest in this issue took place only much later, especially in the 1990s. That was in connection with the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1989 to the leading representative of Tremendism, the writer Camilo José Cela (1916-2002). The thesis explores the resonance of Tremendism in Cela's work in the context of the 40's and 50's of the 20th century. It aims to evaluate Tremendism as a literary phenomenon and to define its contribution to Spanish literature.

Abstract:

Ačkoli je tremendismus jedním z nejpozoruhodnějších literárních jevů ve španělské literatuře 20. století, byl mu zpočátku připisován marginální význam. Teprve od 90. let 20. stol. je možno pozorovat jisté oživení zájmu o tento pozoruhodný literární fenomén. Tato skutečnost primárně souvisí se zvýšenou pozorností, jež byla tehdy věnována tvorbě předního představitele tremendismu Camila Josého Cely (1916 – 2002), který roku 1989 obdržel Nobelovu cenu. Práce zkoumá odraz tremendismu v Celově díle v kontextu 40. a 50. let 20. stol. Klade si za cíl zhodnotit tremendismus jako literární jev a vymezit jeho přínos v rámci španělské literatury.
