Russian intellectuals and their institutional base in Prague (on model of Russian Free University and affiliated institutions, 1923-1945)

Abstract:

Disertace analyzuje aktivitu ruských intelektuálů v Československu na pozadí činnosti Ruské lidové (později svobodné) univerzity v Praze. Nejprve se práce soustředí na proces dobrovolného či nuceného odchodu inteligence z Ruska a zabydlování se v nové vlasti. Pozornost je věnována spolupráci příslušníků inteligence s československou vědou, zejména se zaměřením na procesy etablování ruské inteligence na tuzemských vědeckých a výzkumných pracovištích. Problémy s uplatněním v cizím prostředí nebyly spojené pouze s kvalifikačními a jazykovými předpoklady, ale vstupovaly do ní rovněž obavy majoritní intelektuální skupiny ze ztráty sociálních a symbolických výsad. Druhá část popisuje vlastní činnost Ruské lidové (později svobodné) univerzity za více než dvacet let existence. Úvodní pasáže druhé části se věnují založení a personálnímu a organizačnímu propojení s tradičními lidovýchovnými organizacemi v Rusku. V dalších částech je, kromě vlastní aktivity popisované po jednotlivých školních letech, pozornost zaměřena také na organizační strukturu, její reprezentanty, řídící orgány a charakter hospodaření založený na dotační politice. Poslední kapitola popisuje některé přidružené organizace. Přestože je Ruská lidová (později svobodná) univerzita a veškeré s ní spojené aktivity zkoumána především z hlediska dějin instituce, nelze při zpracování tématu odhlédnout od vnějších faktorů, které výrazně ovlivňovaly ruskou intelektuální komunitu či instituci samotnou. Celou prací se tedy line snaha interpretovat veškerou aktivitu s přihlédnutím k těmto vlivům. Kombinací chronologického a tématického přístupu jsou interpretovány např. důvody které vedly ruské intelektuály k založení instituce, přesunu zájmu z vzdělávání a výchovy mladé generace do oblasti výzkum těžiště aktivit ve třicátých letech, ale i politické změny v souvislosti s Mnichovskou dohodou a následně postoj instituce k okupačním úřadů v době Protektorátu, omezování dotací v době ekonomické krize či právního postavení ruských emigrantů, zejména pak držitelů tzv. nansenovských pasů.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the activities of Russian intellectuals in Czechoslovakia, with a particular focus on the activities of the Russian People’s University in Prague. It starts by describing the process of voluntary or forced departure of Russian intellectuals and their adaptation to life in their new homeland. Attention is paid to their co-operation with Czechoslovakian intellectuals, focusing in particular on the process of integration of Russian scientists into Czechoslovakian scientific and research institutions. Problems pertaining to their adaptation in a foreign environment were associated not only with qualification and language requirements, but also with concerns of some members of Czechoslovakian society over losing its social and symbolic privileges. The next section focuses on the activities of the Russian People’s (later Free) University for more than twenty years of its existence. Its personal and organisational links with similar educational institutions in Russia are described as well as its organisational structure, its representatives, governing bodies and funding policies. Although the Russian People’s (later Free) University is primarily examined in terms of the institution’s history, nevertheless, external factors that significantly influenced the Russian intellectual community and the institution itself cannot be overlooked and are also taken into consideration. This thesis is thus an effort to interpret all the activities of Russian intellectuals in Czechoslovakia with regard to all these influences. The combination of chronological and thematic approaches taken here enables an understanding of aspects of these intellectuals’ activities, such as: the reasons which led to the founding of the University; the shift of interest from education and training to a focus on research activities in the 1930s; the social and political changes connected with the Munich Agreement that impacted the University and its attitude towards occupation authorities in the Protectorate; the cut in subsidies in times of economic crisis; and the legal status of Russian émigrés, especially holders of (so-called) Nansen Passports.
