Latitudinal trends in investment in plumage and feather quality in passerines

Abstract:

Naprostá většina studií zabývajících se ptáky pracuje s druhy mírného pásu, přitom velkou část druhové i funkční diverzity ptáků pojímají tropické oblasti. Tropičtí ptáci se od temperátních ve svých životních strategiích zásadně odlišují. Tempo jejich života je pomalé, a tak například žijí déle, mají nižší hladinu metabolismu a mají menší snůšky než druhy mírného pásu. Růst pera je metabolicky náročný proces, ale dosud není známo, zda se pomalejší tempo života tropických ptáků odráží také v rychlosti růstu per. V této práci jsou využity ptilochronologické postupy a analýza mikrostruktury rýdovacích per pro stanovení investice do růstu a kvality peří u 100 druhů ptáků temperátní a tropické zóny. Bylo zjištěno, že tropickým ptákům rostou pera výrazně pomaleji. V podstatě stejnou rychlost růstu per sdílejí temperátní rezidenti a dálkoví migranti pelichající v tropech, z čehož lze vyvodit, že příčina odlišného tempa růstu je vnitřní a není dána přímo podmínkami prostředí, kde pera rostou. Nejpravděpodobnějším vysvětlením rozdílné růstové rychlosti per je celkově nižší úroveň metabolismu tropických ptáků, i když se v této studii, na omezeném datasetu temperátních druhů, vztah metabolismu a rychlosti růstu per nepodařil prokázat. Na základě většiny sledovaných parametrů kvality per (hmotnost pera, šířka ostnu a denzita větví) překvapivě nebyla zjištěna odlišná kvalita. Pouze hustota paprsků byla u temperátních druhů mírně vyšší. Rozvolnění selekčního tlaku na kvalitu opeření v tropech naznačují výsledky analýzy kazových proužků. Ty byly třikrát častější u tropických druhů a častěji se zde vyskytovaly i závažnější kazy. Výsledky dokládají latitudinální gradient v rychlosti růstu per, shodují se s faktem pomalého tempa života tropických ptáků a poukazují na odlišné investice do opeření v obou oblastech.

Abstract:

The vast majority of bird studies work with temperate species, but tropical areas account for much of the species and functional diversity of birds. Life strategies of tropical birds are fundamentally different from temperate ones. Their pace of life is slow, for example they have longer lifespan, low metabolic rates and smaller clutch sizes than temperate species. Feather growth is a metabolically demanding process but whether the slower pace of life of tropical species is also reflected by slower feather growth remains untested. Here I focus on differences in tail feather growth rates and feather quality in a comparative analysis involving 100 tropical and temperate zone songbird species, using ptilochronology and microstructure analysis aproaches. I found that feathers of tropical birds grow at significantly slower rates. Interestingly, basically the same rate of feather growth was found in temperate residents and long-distance migrants moulting their tail feathers in the tropics, suggesting that the cause of the different growth rates between temperate and tropical species is intrinsic and not directly determined by environmental conditions at the time of moulting. Although lower matabolic rates of tropical birds is the most likely explanation for differences in feather growth rates between climate zones, the relationship between basal metabolic rates and feather growth rates in a subset of predominantly temperate zone species failed to be demonstrated. There were no clear differences in microstructure of tail feathers between tropical and temperate zone species, and only the density of barbules was slightly higher in the temperate zone. Results of fault bars analysis, on the other hand, are in agreement with the prediction of relaxed selection pressure on feather quality tropical songbirds as in tropical species there were three times more fault bars than in their temperate zone counterparts. The results demonstrate a latitudinal difference in the growth rate of avian tail feathers, correspond with the slow pace of life of tropical birds, and point to different investment into plumage quality in both areas.
