Geography of menstruation: mobility behaviour during the period

Abstract:

Although a natural bodily process, menstruation is still to some extent stigmatized and considered a taboo. There is a tendency to make it invisible and move its experience out of the public space. However, the conducted semi-structured interviews suggest that those experiencing menstruation may not want to, be able to, or afford to be exclusively in a private space during their menstrual days. Despite the comfort of their own homes, 14 female communication partners from Slovakia, Czech Republic and France show that they are able to go to work, school or engage in leisure activities during their period. Thus, using the analytical tool of rhythmanalysis, the thesis illustrates not only the intermingling of different activities in time and space, but also the mismatch between the communication partners’ experience of menstruation and the schedules of the institutions, between the onset of menstruation and access to the public toilets or the availability of menstrual products. At the same time, through the lens of crip temporality, the thesis presents that communication partners with menstrual experiences often spend extra time to perform physiological needs. They spend more time in the toilets, experiencing pain and performing physically or mentally challenging work for longer periods of time. However, in this way they become more emancipated, able to point out that they are not the ones who don’t belong in the public space during the menstruation. On the contrary, it is rather the public space that is not sufficiently prepared (physically, socially, culturally and economically) for their menstruation.

Abstract:

Menštruácia, síce prirodzený telesný proces, je stále do určitej miery stigmatizovaná a tabuizovaná. Existuje snaha ju zneviditeľňovať a jej prežívanie presúvať mimo verejný priestor. Z prevedených semi-štruktúrovaných rozhovorov však vyplýva, že osoby, ktoré majú skúsenosť s menštruáciou nemusia chcieť, môcť, alebo dovoliť si nachádzať sa počas svojich menštruačných dní výhradne v súkromnom priestore. Aj napriek komfortu svojho vlastného domova, 14 komunikačných partneriek zo Slovenska, Českej republiky a Francúzska poukazuje na to, že počas menštruácie dokážu chodiť do práce, školy, či vykonávať voľnočasové aktivity. Využívajúc analytický nástroj analýzu rytmov je tak v práci znázornené nielen prelínanie rôznych udalostí v čase a priestore, ale i nesúlad medzi prežívaním menštruácie komunikačných partneriek a rozvrhmi inštitúcií, medzi nástupom menštruácie a prístupom verejných toaliet, či dostupnosťou menštruačných produktov. Zároveň, optikou crip temporality je v práci predstavené, že komunikačné partnerky s menštruačnými skúsenosťami častokrát vynakladajú čas naviac na vykonávanie fyziologických potrieb. Trávia dlhší čas na toaletách, prežívaním bolestí i dlhším vykonávaním fyzickej či psychicky náročnej práce. Stávajú sa tak však viac emancipovanými, schopnými poukázať na to, že nie sú to ony, ktoré počas menštruácie nepatria do verejného priestoru. Je to naopak verejný priestor, ktorý na menštruáciu nie je dostatočne pripravený (fyzicky, sociálne, kultúrne i ekonomicky).
