The concept of the soul and the afterlife in ancient Greece and Rome

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je Pojetí duše a posmrtný život ve starověkém Řecku a Římě. Hlavním cílem bude vytvořit komplexní obraz obou zemí o vybraných tématech tak, aby poskytl všeobjímající pohled na náboženské praktiky starověkého světa Řeků a Římanů. Srovnávací metoda byla zvolena jako nejvhodnější metodika. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních bloků, přičemž se zaměřuje nejprve na Řecko a poté na Řím. V první kapitole každého bloku je úvod do náboženství, aby bylo jasné, jak jsou si podobní. Jednotlivá náboženství jsou si v mnoha ohledech dost podobná, protože obyvatelé Říma přijali některé prvky z řeckého náboženství a některé od Etrusků nebo Egypťanů. V textu je také část věnovaná tvorbě a vývoji pojmu duše a také tomu, co si o ní lidé myslí. Jak se v průběhu času formoval jeho význam a jednotlivé funkce. V následující kapitole; jsou informace o podsvětí a jeho vládcích. Velká část je také věnována myšlenkám na to, co se děje s duší v říši mrtvých. Poté následují kapitoly o pohřbech a různých rituálech, které vedou k uctívání duší. Text také obsahuje základní popis některých pohřebních zákonů. Ve druhé části textu: témata jednotlivců (podsvětí, duše v říši mrtvých; a pohřební rituály) jsou analyzována vždy z pohledu Římanů. V tezi je jedna kapitola o jejich bozích (duchích), protože pro Římany byli duchové docela důležití. Na závěr; čtenář najde shrnutí a srovnání všech důležitých aspektů, kterým se autor věnoval. Cílem této práce bylo porovnat různé představy starověkých Řeků a Římanů.

Abstract:

The theme of the Bachelor thesis is The Concept of the Soul and the Afterlife in Ancient Greece and Rome. The main objective will be to create a comprehensive picture of the two countries on selected topics so as to provide an all-embracing view of the religious practices of the ancient world of the Greeks and Romans. The comparative method was chosen as the most appropriate methodology. The work is divided into two main blocks, focusing first on Greece and then on Rome. In the first chapter of each block, is introduction to religion, so that it is clear how they are similar. The individual religions are quite similar in many respects, as the inhabitants of the Rome adopted some elements from the Greek religion and some from the Etruscans or Egyptians. There is also a section in the text devoted to the creation and evolution of the concept of the soul and also to what people thought of it. How its meaning and individual functions formed over time. In the following chapter; is information about the underworld and its rulers. There is also a large part devoted to ideas about what happens to the soul in the realm of the dead. This is followed by chapters on burials and various rituals that lead to the worshiping of the souls. The text also contains a basic account of some funeral laws. In the second part of the text: individuals themes (the underworld, the souls in the realm of the dead; and the funeral rituals) they are analyzed always from the point of view of the Romans. There is one chapter in the thesis about their gods (spirits), because for Romans spirits were quite important. In conclusion; the reader will find a summary and a comparison of all the important aspects that the author has addressed. The aim of this thesis was to compare the different ideas of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
