Trust, political efficacy and civic engagement of young adults

Abstract:

Má-li demokratický stát fungovat, je zapotřebí zapojení občanů. Ve své práci se zabývám formami občanské participace, konkrétně protestní, konvenční, konzumní, online a komunitní, a možnou souvislostí s konstrukty interní politické efficacy, externí politické efficacy, institucionální důvěry a mezilidské důvěry spolu s genderovými rozdíly. Případná zjištění mohou přispět k lepšímu pochopení specifik jednotlivých forem participace. Dotazník vyplnilo 1209 participantů ve věku 18 až 30 let, jedná se o sekundární užití. Na datech jsem pomocí parciálních korelací dospěla k závěrům, že protestní participace souvisí s nižší mírou důvěry v instituce a konvenční politická participace souvisí s vyšší mírou interní politické efficacy. Dále se ukázaly genderové rozdíly ve frekvenci vykonávání konvenční politické participace. Naopak nebyla podpořena souvislost mezi komunitní participací a mezilidskou důvěrou, konvenční participací a interní politickou efficacy, a online participací a externí politickou efficacy. Navíc ženy nevykazovaly nižší míru interní politické efficacy než muži.

Abstract:

If a democratic state is to function, the involvement of citizens is needed. In my study, I am dealing with forms of civic engagement, specifically protest, conventional, consumer, online and community participation, and their associations with internal political efficacy, external political efficacy, institutional trust and interpersonal trust and gender differences. Findings can contribute to a better understanding of the specifics of individual forms of participation. The questionnaire was filled out by 1209 participants aged 18 to 30. Using partial correlations analysis, I came to the conclusions that protest participation is related to a lower degree of trust in institutions and that conventional participation is related to a higher degree of internal political efficacy. Furthermore, there were gender differences in the frequency of performing conventional participation. However, results did not support the association between community participation and interpersonal trust, conventional participation and internal political efficacy, and online participation and external political efficacy. Also, women did not show a lower level of internal political efficacy than men.
