Forer effect in popular psychological assessment

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá Forerovým efektem v oblasti psychologického testování. Cílem studie bylo ověření reliability do českého jazyka přeložené škály, kterou vytvořil pro účely své původní studie Bertram R. Forer. Pro účely současné studie bylo použito 12 z původních třinácti položek. Druhým cílem studie bylo zkoumání existence Forerova efektu v popisu osobnostních typů, které lze identifikovat na základě dotazníku Keirsey Type Sorter (KTS). Této kvantitativní studie se zúčastnilo 329 respondentů, kteří byli ve věku 18-64 let (M = 24,28; SD = 6,38), z toho 230 žen (70%) a 99 mužů (30%). Reliabilita ve smyslu vnitřní konzistence byla pro českou verzi škály obsahující Forerovy výroky α = 0,81. Díky mnohonásobné lineární regresi bylo zjištěno, že Forerovým efektem lze vysvětlit významnou část souhlasu s popisem osobnostních typů. Dále pro škálu zjišťující míru souhlasu s osobnostními typy byla zjištěná hodnota reliability ve smyslu split-half 0,72. Byla zkoumána také reliabilita ve smyslu vnitřní konzistence pro dotazník KTS. Tato hodnota byla α = 0,73 pro dimenzi extraverze-introverze, α= 0,84 pro dimenzi smysly-intuice, α = 0,86 pro dimenzi myšlení-cítění a α = 0,78 pro dimenzi usuzování-vnímán.

Abstract:

This study is concerned with the Forer effect in the field of psychological testing. The aim of the current study was to examine the reliability of the Czech version of the scale which was created by Bertram R. Forer for the purpose of his research. For the purposes of the current study, twelve out of the thirteen items were used. The secondary aim of the study was an examination of the existence of the Forer effect in the description of the personality types which can be obtained from the questionnaire Keirsey Type Sorter (KTS). There were 329 participants in the study who were aged 18-64 years old (M = 24,28; SD = 6,38) out of which there were 230 women (70%) and 99 men (30%). Reliability of internal consistency was 0,81 for the Czech version of the scale containing the statements by Forer. Multiple linear regression uncovered that the Forer effect can explain a significant portion of the acceptance of personality types. The amount of reliability in the meaning of split-half for the scale determining the degree of compliance with the personality types reached 0,72. The reliability in the meaning of internal consistency examined for the KTS questionnaire was α = 0,73 for the dimension Extroversion-Introversion, it was α = 0,84 for the dimension Sensing-Intuition, it was α = 0,86 for the dimension Thinking-Feeling and it was α = 0,78 for the dimension Judging-Perceiving.
