Chosen Fields from History of Mathematical Linguistics

Abstract:

Cílem práce je představit jednak méně známé skutečnosti z historie matematické lingvistiky, jednak významné výsledky, které se zasloužily o rozvoj této hraniční disciplíny stojící na pomezí matematiky a jazykovědy. Po seznámení s oborem matematická lingvistika a jeho jednotlivými částmi – lingvistikou kvantitativní, algebraickou a počítačovou – následuje část historická, ve které jsou popsány různé aplikace matematických metod, a to už od středověku a starověku (kabala, frekvence a její praktické aplikace, V. J. Bunjakovskij, A. A. Markov, G. K. Zipf, glottochronologie, A. Seydler, J. A. Komenský atd.).

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to introduce both lesser-known facts from the history of mathematical linguistics, and significant results which have contributed to the development of the discipline on the borderline between mathematics and linguistics. After getting familiar with the field of computational linguistics and its constituent parts - a quantitative, algebraic and computational linguistics - there follows the historic section which describes various applications of mathematical methods since the Middle Ages and antiquity (cabbalah, frequency and its practical applications, V.J. Bunjakovskij, A.A. Markov, G.K. Zipf, glottochronology, A. Seydler, J.A. Comenius, etc.).
