Investigation of factors that affect the experience of loneliness during a pandemic in older adults

Abstract:

Cílem studie bylo prozkoumat, jaké faktory ovlivňují pocity osamělosti během pandemie u starších dospělých. Zvolenými faktory byly objektivní sociální izolace, sociální opora (instrumentální a emocionální) a destruktivní závislost. Sekundárním cílem studie byl popis zvládacích strategií, které během pandemie starší dospělí využívali. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 421 respondentů ve věku 52 až 89 let (M = 69,9, SD = 5,9). Dotazník byl administrován online formou. Výsledky studie značí pozitivní souvislost mezi objektivní sociální izolací a osamělostí. Dále byl zjištěn pozitivní vztah mezi destruktivní závislostí a osamělostí. Zdá se, že emociální opora pomohla snížit pocity osamělosti, nicméně instrumentální opora nebyla shledána signifikantním prediktorem osamělosti. Největší vliv na osamělost měla objektivní sociální izolace a nejmenší destruktivní závislost. Nejpreferovanějšími zvládacími strategiemi byly: akceptování, mentální vzdání, pozitivní reinterpretace a aktivní zvládání. Při interpretace výsledků bereme v úvahu limity studie, které jsou zmíněny v diskuzi.

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to examine the factors affecting loneliness during a pandemic in older adults. The selected factors were objective social isolation, social support (instrumental and emotional) and destructive overdependence. The secondary aim of the study was to describe the coping strategies used by older adults during the pandemic. 421 respondents participated in the study aged from 52 to 89 years (M = 69,9, SD = 5,9). The questionnaire was administered online. The results of the study show a positive relationship between objective social isolation and loneliness. Furthermore, a positive relationship between destructive overpendency and loneliness was discovered. Emotional support seems to have helped reduce feelings of loneliness but instrumental support has not been found to be a significant predictor of loneliness. Objective social isolation had the greatest impact of loneliness and destructive overdependence had the least. The most preferred coping strategies were: acceptance, mental disengagement, positive reinterpretation, and active coping. When interpreting the results, we take into account the limits of the study which are mentioned in the discussion.
