Preparation and properties of S-doped carbonaceous adsorbents

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na přípravu uhlíkatých materiálů dopovaných sírou. Byly připraveny čtyři různé materiály, na kterých byla testována adsorpce Hg2+ a Cd2+ iontů z vodných roztoků. Dva resorcinol-formaldehydové materiály byly připraveny metodou sol-gel, během které byla síra zavedena do struktury materiálů ve formě síranů v průběhu polykondenzační fáze. Třetí adsorbent byl také připraven metodou sol-gel; v tomto případě byl použit resorcinol a 2-thiofenkarboxaldehyd jako výchozí látky. V poslední přípravě byl resorcinol-formaldehydový materiál impregnován v roztoku sulfidu sodném. Všechny materiály byly charakterizovány za účelem zjištění obsahu síry a morfologie materiálu. Bylo zjištěno, že sírou dopované uhlíkaté materiály jsou vhodné adsorbenty hlavně pro adsorpci Hg2+ iontů z vodných roztoků. Tři ze sledovaných čtyř adsorbentů vykazují pro adsorpci Hg2+ iontů lepší adsorpční vlastnosti než aktivní uhlí, přičemž nejvyšší adsorpční množství vykazoval resorcinol-formaldehydový materiál, v jehož případě se síra zaváděla do struktury ve formě síranu sodného v polykondenzačním stavu (1,45 mmol/g). Adsorpční kapacity Cd2+ iontů byly ve všech případech nižší než u adsorpce rtuti. Jako nejlepší adsorbent se jevil resorcinol-formaldehydový materiál impregnovaný v roztoku Na2S (0,53 mmol/g). Ve všech připravených materiálech byla potvrzena přítomnost síry. Nejvyšší obsah síry byl ve vzorku připraveném metodou sol-gel, kdy se síra zaváděla během polykondenzace ve formě 2-thiofenkarboxaldehydu (8,43 %).

Abstract:

The work is focused on the preparation of carbon materials doped with sulfur. Four different materials were prepared and tested by means of the adsorption of Hg2+ and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. Two resorcinol-formaldehyde materials were prepared by sol-gel method and the sulfur was introduced into the structure of the materials in the form of sulfates during the polycondensation phase. The third adsorbent was prepared by sol-gel method, but in this case the resorcinol and 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde were used as starting substances. The last sorbent was prepared from resorcinol and formaldehyde and prepared material was impregnated in a Na2S solution. All adsorbents were characterised to reveal the sulfur content in the materials and their morphology. It was found that sulfur-doped carbonaceous materials are suitable adsorbents especially for Hg2+ ions from aqueous solutions. Three of the four adsorbents exhibited higher adsorption of Hg2+ ions in comparison to activated carbon. The resorcinol-formaldehyde material doped with sulfur by addition of Na2SO4 solution during the polycondensation phase showed the best adsorption capacity for Hg2+ ions (1,45 mmol/g). The adsorption capacities of Cd2+ ions were lower in all cases than the adsorption of Hg2+ ions. The resorcinol-formaldehyde material impregnated in a solution of Na2S seems to be the best adsorbent for Cd2+ ions (0,53 mmol/g). The presence of the sulphur was confirmed in all prepared samples. The highest content of the sulfur was found in the sample prepared by sol-gel method, when the sulfur was introduced during polycondensation phase in the form of the 2-thiofencarboxyaldehyde (8,43 %).
