The discourse of Margaret Thatcher to the Maastricht Treaty and to the course of European integration

Abstract:

Studentka se ve své bakalářské práci zabývá bývalou britskou premiérkou Margaret Thatcherovou a jejím diskurzem vůči Maastrichtské smlouvě. Jako metodu své práce si studentka zvolila analýzu diskurzu. Konkrétní výzkumné otázky bakalářské práce zní: jaké metafory, významy či rétorické figury používala Margaret Thatcher v souvislosti se svou polemikou s projektem EU? Podotázky- jaký diskurz na základě rozboru textů používala Margaret Thatcherová v souvislosti se Smlouvou o Evropské unii? Jak nazírala Thatcherová na směřování evropské integrace po jejím podepsání? Ztotožnila se s tímto směrem? Výše zmíněná metoda poskytne odpovědi na tyto otázky. Metoda byla aplikována především na primární data - jednalo se o politická prohlášení, proslovy na půdě britského parlamentu či rozhovory pro britské noviny. Cílem práce je vysledovat diskurz Margaret Thatcher vůči jednotlivým projektům, které vyústily podpisem Maastrichtské smlouvy v únoru roku 1992. Konkrétně se jednalo o projekt HMU a politické unie. Časový rámec analýzy tvoří roky 1990 a 1991, což je logické ohraničení s ohledem na intenzitu mezivládních debat. Kromě primárních dat byly cenným zdrojem také paměti samotné premiérky, které sepsala po svém odchodu z premiérského křesla.

Abstract:

Student girl in her thesis deals with former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her discourse to the Maastricht Treaty. As a method of working a student chose the discourse analysis. The specific research questions of the thesis is: what metaphors, meanings and rhetorical figures used by Margaret Thatcher in connection with her polemic with the EU project? The sub-questions-what discourse based on the analysis of texts used by Margaret Thatcher in connection with the Treaty on European Union? How Thatcher seems to see the direction of European integration after signing? Aligned with this direction? The above method will provide the answers to those questions. The method was applied by the primary data - it was a political statement, talks to the British Parliament or an interview with the newspaper. The aim is to trace the discourse of Margaret Thatcher to individual projects, which resulted in the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in February 1992. Specifically, it was a project of EMU and political union. Timeframe analysis forms the years 1990 and 1991, which is logical border with regard to the amount of intergovernmental debates. In addition to the primary data were a valuable source of memory Thatcher, who wrote after her departure from the prime minister.
