Differential object marking in Slovak: Role and Reference Grammar account

Anotácia:

Cieľom práce je vysvetliť koncept Differential Object Marking (DOM) a jeho podobu v slovenčine, a pokúsiť sa vysvetliť jeho funkciu v tomto jazyku. DOM sa v slovenčine vyskytuje na bežne prijatých škálach životnosti a špecifickosti, v životných maskuliných substantívach a zámenách. Výzkum tohoto javu je prevedený typologicky pomocou systému Role and Reference Grammar (RRG). V priebehu práce sú vyvinuté pravidlá pre slovenčinu na určovanie genitívu v RRG. Zatiaľ čo DOM pre zámená sa dá vysvetliť pomocou teórie operátorov v RRG, DOM životných maskulín je potrebné analyzovať morfologickým prí- stupom namiesto morfosyntaktického.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to explain the concept of Differential Object Marking (DOM) and it’s appearance in Slovak, and attempt to explain its functioning within the language. DOM in Slovak exhibits on the two commonly accepted axes, animacy and definiteness, in animate masculine nouns and third person pronouns respectively. The examination of this phenomenon is done typologically using Role and Reference Grammar (RRG). In the course of the thesis, basic rules for Slovak genitive case assignment in RRG are created. While the DOM of pronouns can be explained via the theory of operators present in RRG, the DOM of animate masculine nouns will require further morphological analysis rather than a morphosyntactic one.
