Myrmecophagy and araneophagy in spiders of the family Thomisidae

Abstract:

Myrmekofagie (lov mravenců) a araneofagie (lov pavouků) jsou nejčastějším typem potravní specializace pavouků (Araneae), jinak generalistů a pravých predátorů. Striktní myrmekofagie byla objevena u několika druhů z čeledi běžníkovití (Thomisidae), ale není zcela známo, zda mravence a jiné pavouky loví i ostatní druhy běžníků. Teoretická část práce je rešerše na téma akceptace kořisti, potravní specializace a lovecké strategie druhů běžníků. Pro experimentální část jsem nasbírala deset českých a dostala pět zahraničních rodů (z Austrálie, Jižní Afriky a Portugalska) běžníkovitých pavouků, na kterých jsem testovala přítomnost myrmekofagie a araneofagie. Všechny použité druhy lovili pavouky, což naznačuje, že jsou velkou součástí jejich stravy. Myrmekofagie byla pozorována u většiny použitých druhů, vyjma Ebrechtella tricuspidata, Misumena vatia a Australomisidia ergandros. Žádný z druhů nelovil striktně jeden typ kořisti, jelikož všechny akceptovaly i mouchy. Šířka trofické niky byla odhadnuta pro jedenáct českých rodů běžníků z fotografií pavouků s kořistí. Každý rod má úzkou stravu s jedním dominující typem kořisti, nejčastěji dvoukřídlí (Diptera) nebo blanokřídlí (Hymenoptera). Mravenci byly dominantním typem jen ve stravě Coriarachne depressa a Tmarus sp. Běžníci nejčastěji lovili svou kořist přiblížením zepředu a drželi ji za hlavu nebo hlavohruď. Myrmekofagie a araneofagie jsou tedy časté potravní specializace českých druhů běžníků, ale v akceptaci mravenců jsou mezi druhy značné rozdíly.

Abstract:

Mmyrmecophagy (ant eating) and araneophagy (spider eating) are the most often types of trophic specialisation of spiders (Araneae), otherwise generalist true predators. Strict myrmecophagy is known in a few species of the Thomisidae family but acceptance of ants and other spiders is still to be found in many thomisid species. The theoretical part of the thesis is the literature overview of prey acceptance, specialisation, and hunting strategies of Thomisidae spiders. For the experimental part I collected ten Czech and got another five foreign genera (from Australia, South Africa, and Portugal) of Thomisidae spiders to test the presence of myrmecophagy and araneophagy. Breadth of trophic niche was estimated for eleven Czech genera of Thomisidae from photography evidence of spiders feeding on prey. No species fed strictly on one type of prey as all of them also accepted flies. All the used species captured spiders. Myrmecophagy was observed in most of the used species, apart from Ebrechtella tricuspidata, Misumena vatia, and Australomisidia ergandros. Each genus has a narrow diet with one dominating prey type, mostly Diptera or Hymenoptera. Ants were a dominating type in the diet of Coriarachne depressa and Tmarus sp. only. Most often the spiders caught their prey approaching its front side and held it by its head or cephalothorax. Both myrmecophagy and araneophagy are often trophic specializations among Czech species of the Thomisidae family but there are significant differences in the acceptance of ants.
