Generativity and the meaning of life in older adults

Abstract:

Cílem této studie bylo na základě teoretických a empirických podkladů hlouběji prozkoumat vztah mezi generativitou a smyslem života u lidí starší dospělosti. V rámci výzkumu jsme se zaměřili na vliv generativity na prožívání smyslu a některé demografické faktory ve vztahu ke generativitě a smyslu života. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 148 respondentů ve věku od 50 do 65 let v zastoupení 88 žen (59,5 %) a 60 mužů (40,5 %). Pro měření generativního zájmu jsme použili Loyola Generativity Scale (LGS), pro měření generativního jednání jsme použili Generativity Behavioral Checklist (GBC). Pro měření smyslu života jsme použili Škálu životnej zmysluplnosti (ŠŽZ) inspirovanou trojkomponentovým modelem, složeným z kognitivní, motivační a afektivní složky. Výsledky ukázaly statisticky významný vztah mezi generativitou a všemi složkami smyslu života. Dále jsme zjistili, že je generativita významným prediktorem smyslu života u lidí střední dospělosti. Generativní zájem se ukázal jako významný prediktor prožívání smyslu života. Nejsilnější vztah byl mezi generativním zájmem a kognitivní složkou smyslu života. V případě genderových a věkových demografických údajů se neprokázaly žádné signifikantní rozdíly, ani v případě generativity ani v případě smyslu života.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore theoretically and empirically the relationship between generativity and meaning of life in people older adulthood. In the research we focused on the influence of generativity to experience the meaning of life and some demographic factors in relation to generativity and the meaning of life. The research group consisted of 148 respondents aged from 50 to 65 years on behalf of 88 women (59,5 %) and 60 men (40,5 %). We used Generativity Behavioral Checklist (GBC) for measurements of generativity behavior and Loyola Gnerativity Scale (LGS) for generativity concern. We also used Scale of Life meaningfullness, inspirated by three dimensional model, composed of cognitive, motivational and affective component for measurement of meaning of life. Results showed that generativity is significantly associated with meaning of life and all its components. Furthermore, we found that there is a significant predictor generativity meaning of life in people middle adulthood. Generative interest emerged as a significant predictor of experiencing meaning in life. The strongest relationship was found between generative concern and cognitive component of meaning of life. In case of gender and age demographics revealed no significant differences, even if generativity even if the meaning of life in older adulthood.
