Australia between China and the United States: the dilemma and perspectives of Australian foreign policy

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá australskou pozicí mezi rostoucí Čínou a Spojenými státy americkými, z níž vychází stěžejní dilema australské zahraniční politiky. Primárním cílem je analyzovat a zhodnotit přístup Canberry k tomuto dilematu po roce 1990 a zjistit, zda Austrálie míří, či nikoliv, do čínské sféry vlivu. Práce k tomuto účelu využívá teorii o reakci druhořadých zemí na rostoucí mocnost ve svém regionu. Důraz dále klade na prozkoumání dopadů australského dilematu na alianci ANZUS mezi Austrálií a USA. Na závěr práce navrhuje tři možné budoucí scénáře směřování australské zahraniční politiky v kontextu její pozice mezi oběma mocnostmi.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the Australian position between rising China and the United States of America because of the main foreign policy dilemma stemming from this position. The main objective is to analyze and evaluate Canberra’s approach towards this dilemma after 1990 and to find out whether Australia is tilting to Chinese sphere of influence. The thesis uses the theory of secondary-state responses to a rising power in its region. An emphasis is also given to implications of the dilemma for ANZUS alliance between Australia and the U.S. Finally, the thesis presents three potential future scenarios for Australian foreign policy based on Australia’s dilemmatic position between the two powers.
