The Beginnings of Roman Verse Satire, C. Lucilius

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá postavou básníka C. Lucilia a jeho vztahem k počátkům římského literárního žánru – veršované satiry. Ukazuje, proč je právě C. Lucilius označován jako její inventor. Dotýká se i společenské, politické a literární situace Říma v druhé polovině 2. století př. n. l., protože autor satir je vždy bezprostředně spjat se svým okolím. Z dochovaných 1400 zlomků Luciliova díla důkladně analyzuje fragmenty tykající se kritiky. Tyto zlomky jsou dále rozděleny podle námětu do dalších kategorií. Na konci každé skupiny je přehledně shrnuto, zda je Luciliovo téma živé i dnes. Díky dochovaným fragmentům lze říci, že se s Luciliem v Římě vyvinul nový, hexametrem psaný žánr, který obsahoval především kritiku a v pozměněné formě přetrval až do dnešních dob.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the poet C. Lucilius and his relation to the beginnigs of Roman literary genre – verse satire. It shows, why C. Lucilius is said to be its inventor. It also covers the public, political and literary situation of Rome in the 2nd century B. C., because the author of satires is always connected with its surrounding. From 1400 preserved fragments of Lucilius’ work, this thesis analyses thoroughly fragments concerning critical element. These fragments are further divided according to their themes into other categories. At the end of each group there is summarised, whether Lucilius’ topic is up to date. Thanks to the preserved fragments, it could be said that Lucilius started a new genre which included mainly criticism and which was written in hexameter. In a modified form, this genre has survived until these days.
