Eritrea's Position in the Horn of Africa

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je "Postavení Eritrey v oblasti Afrického rohu." Jejím obsahem je zejména zhodnocení významu státu Eritrea od okamžiku osamostatnění se od Etiopie až po současnost. Dále také určení faktorů, které vedly k podepsání mírové dohody mezi Etiopií a Eritreou. Práce má za cíl především zodpovědět následující výzkumnou otázku: jaký vliv má vládnoucí strana PFDJ (dříve EPLF) a osobnost prezidenta Isaiase Afwerkiho na vztahy se státy regionu. Nejdříve je charakterizována vnitropolitická situace ve státě Eritrea. Zvláštní důraz je přitom kladen na důsledky autoritářské vlády zmíněného prezidenta, především na chudobu obyvatelstva a porušování lidských práv, které vedou k emigraci obyvatel ze země. V další části práce je přiblížen vnitropolitický vývoj Eritrey po dosažení nezávislosti v roce 1993 a také její vztahy s ostatními státy regionu. V závěru jsou nastíněny možnosti budoucího politického vývoje státu Eritrea.

Abstract:

The theme of the bachelor thesis is "The position of Eritrea in the Horn of Africa.'In particular, it contains an assessment of the importance of the State of Eritrea from the moment of its independence from Ethiopia to the present. Furthermore, the identification of the factors that led to the signing of the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The aim of the work is primarily to answer the following research question: what influence the ruling PFDJ (formerly EPLF) party and the personality of President Isaias Afwerki have on relations with the states of the region. The internal political situation in the State of Eritrea is first characterised. Particular emphasis is placed on the consequences of the authoritarian rule of the said president, in particular the poverty of the population and the human rights violations that lead to the emigration of the population from the country. In another part of the work, Eritrea's internal political development after independence in 1993 and its relations with other states in the region are approximated. The conclusion outlines the possibilities for the future political development of the State of Eritrea.
