Recreation of the Roaring Twenties: The Jazz Age Atmosphere in Selected Contemporary Films

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá bouřlivými dvacátými lety Ameriky, známými také pod názvem jazzový věk, a způsobem, jakým je jejich atmosféra znázorněna ve vybraných oscarových filmech. Konkrétně jsou analyzovány filmy Umělec (2011) a Velký Gatsby (2013). Bakalářská práce má za cíl obhájit, že Hazanaviciusův Umělec je zaměřen na tradici a nostalgii, čímž si může zachovat svou kvalitu i do budoucna. I přesto, že je tento film černobílý a němý, což je přes sto let stará filmařská technika, zaslouženě získal uznání i v 21. století. Naproti tomu Luhrmannův způsob ztvárnění Velkého Gatsbyho, který obsahuje prvky ze současnosti jako je např. hip hop, by mohl být zcela vhodný pro současného filmového diváka, avšak aby divák porozuměl Luhrmannovu cíli, což je propojení dvacátých let a současnosti, je zapotřebí myslet kriticky.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the American Roaring Twenties, also known as the Jazz Age, and how the atmosphere of the period is depicted in selected Oscar-awarded films, namely The Artist (2011) and The Great Gatsby (2013). It suggests that Hazanavicius’s Artist focuses on tradition and nostalgia, therefore has the potential to maintain its quality further on. It deserves to have won the appreciation in the 21st century despite being a black-and-white silent film, which is over a century-old film-making form. On the contrary, Luhrmann’s approach to The Great Gatsby, incorporating contemporary elements such as hip-hop, may be perfectly suitable for present-day audience, however critical thinking is needed in order to understand the aim of the film, which is to create a link between 1920s and 2010s.
