Reproduction of Gender Stereotypes in an EFL classroom at lower-secondary school

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou reprodukce genderových stereotypů ve výuce anglického jazyka s využitím videostudie. Nejprve jsou představeny klíčové pojmy, práce je teoreticky ukotvena v kontextu vývoje feministického hnutí a teorií genderu ve vzdělávání a jsou představeny klíčové práce zabývající se genderovou citlivostí výuky, genderovými stereotypy a jejich vlivem na vývoj genderové identity jedince, aspektem genderu ve vzdělávání a ve výuce. Tento výzkum si klade dva hlavní cíle. Z hlediska metodologického vypracovat přehledné a spolehlivé kategoriální systémy, které pokrývají celou šíři námi vymezeného problému. Z hlediska výsledků je cílem našeho výzkumu zjistit, zda v námi vybraných sledovaných aspektech výuky angličtiny dochází k nerovnému přístupu ze strany učitele k chlapcům či dívkám. Pro účely této práce byly vyvinuty tři kategoriální systémy, z nichž každý je zaměřen na jednu z oblastí reprodukce genderových stereotypů: míru pozornosti učitele věnovanou chlapcům a dívkám, vyvolávání chlapců a dívek (včetně typů otázek a jejich pořadí) a kázeňské pokyny učitele. Po kategorizaci výzkumných dat byly provedeny kvantitativní analýzy s cílem zjistit, v jakých aspektech dochází ve výuce anglického jazyka k nerovnému přístupu učitele k žákům na základě pohlaví a zdali tyto oblasti nerovného přístupu odrážejí genderové stereotypy. Paralelně s kvantitativní analýzou probíhala také kvalitativní interpretativní analýza, jejíž výsledky doplňují a dokreslují výsledky analýz kvantitativních. V závěru práce jsou nastíněny další cesty, kterými se může následný výzkum genderových stereotypů ubírat spolu s návrhy, jak se postavit k genderové nerovnosti ve vzdělávání.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the topic of reproduction of gender stereotypes in teaching English as a foreign language. The research is video-based. Firstly, the key concepts are introduced, the study is set in the context of the historical development of the feminist movement as well as theories of gender and education. The state-of-the-art is outlined regarding the aspect of gender in teaching and in education in general, gender-sensitive teaching, gender stereotypes and their impact on the formation of one’s gender identity. Two main goals are set in this research. In terms of methodology it is to develop comprehensive and reliable systems of categories covering the whole range of the problem as outlined in the dissertation. In terms of research outcomes it aims to determine whether there is gender insensitive approach towards boys or girls detectable in the areas of teaching as specified and observed in our research. Three systems of categories were developed in order to categorise the data, each of which focuses on one area of reproduction of gender stereotypes: the extent of attention paid to girls or boys by the teacher, calling out boys and girls (including the types and order of questions asked), as well as teachers’ disciplinary instructions. After the data were categorised, quantitative analyses were conducted in order to determine which aspects of teaching English are gender biased, moreover, whether the areas of gender bias reflect gender stereotypes. Parallel to the quantitative analyses, a qualitative interpretive analysis was carried out. Its outcomes complement and further illustrate the outcomes of the quantitative analyses. In the conclusion, possible directions of further research into gender stereotypes and gender bias in teaching are suggested together with particular propositions in terms of dealing with gender bias in Czech classrooms.
