The cult of Saint Wenceslaus in the 20th century

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na kult svatého Václava ve 20. století v českých zemích. Hlavní důraz je kladen na přehled vývoje svatováclavského kultu. Cílem této práce je podat ucelený obraz o vývoji a významu svatováclavského kultu zejména ve vztahu k přelomovým událostem státních dějin ve 20. století. Práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních částí. První část práce se zabývá historickým obdobím 9. a 10. století v českých zemích. Toto období mělo vliv na vznik a formování svatováclavského kultu. Dále je zde přiblížena postava knížete Václava jako historické osobnosti a světce. V závěru první části je podán stručný přehled vývoje a významu svatováclavského kultu od 10. do 19. století. Druhá část práce mapuje proměny kultu a vnímání knížete Václava od roku 1918 do roku 1989. Svatováclavský kult a jeho proměny jsou zde popsány v období první světové války, vzniku Československa, protektorátu a socialismu. Třetí část práce pojednává o kultu svatého Václava po roce 1989. Popisuje oživení tohoto kultu vlivem změn politického režimu. V závěru této části je stručně přiblížena svatováclavská tradice v umění a architektuře, která je vymezena jen na 20. století. Výsledkem bakalářské práce je ucelený přehled vývoje a významu kultu svatého Václava ve 20. století.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the cult of St. Wenceslaus in the 20th century. Major emphasis is placed on review development of St. Wenceslaus cult. The aim of this work is to give a comprehensive view of the evolution and significance of St Wenceslaus's cult, particularly in relation to events breakthrough state history in the 20 th century. This work is divided into three parts. The first part of the work deals with the historical period of the 9th and 10th century in the Bohemia. This period had an impact on the emergence and formation of St. Wenceslaus's cult. There is a closer approach to Wenceslaus as a historical person and his sainthood. At the end of the first part there is given a brief overview of the development and importance of Wenceslaus's cult from 10th to 19th century. The second part of this work presents the transformation in the cult and perception of Duke Wenceslaus from the year 1918 to 1989. Transformation of Wenceslaus's cult are described during the period of the First World War, the establishment of Czechoslovakia, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the transition to socialism. The third part of this work analyzed the cult of St. Wenceslaus after the year 1989. It describes the revival of the cult due to changes in political regime. In the conclusion section, there is a close insight in to the Wenceslaus's tradition in art and architecture of 20th century. The result of this work is a comprehensive review of the development and importance of St. Wenceslaus's cult in the 20th century.
