Cinemagoing in the workers everyday life - the case study of Zidenice and Zabrdovice in the 1930s

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the local research on moviegoing in working districts of Brno in the second half of the 1930s. The living conditions and social status of the workers had an effect on the leisure activities and their relationship to cinema. In the everyday life of the worker, the cinema had its own place, especially the cinema in their neighbourhood. It was a place for the informal social life and it provided specific kind of amusement, which met the demand for attraction and pleasure. Workers, chained to their work and social status, looked up to the adventures in exotic lands and to the spectacular setting of Hollywood movies. On the other hand, they identified themselves with the melodramatic heroes with similar life obstacles. The cinema thus did not only amuse, but also flavoured the weekly routine of workers.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá lokálnym výskumom diváctva v brnenských robotníckych štvrtiach v 30. rokoch 20. storočia. Životné podmienky a sociálny status robotníkov mali vplyv na trávenie voľného času a vzťahu ku kinu. V každodennom živote robotníka malo kino svoje miesto, predovšetkým kino v susedstve. Bolo to miesto neformálneho spoločenského života a poskytovalo špecifický druh zábavy, ktorý uspokojoval dopyt po atrakcii a zábave. Robotníci zo svojej pozície zviazanej s prácou a spoločenským statusom vzhliadali k dobrodružstvám v exotických krajinách a k spektakulárnosti výpravy hollywoodskych filmoch. Na druhej strane sa stotožňovali s dramatickými postavami s podobnými životnými prekážkami. Kino tak nielen zabávalo, ale ozvláštňovalo rutinu pracovného týždňa.
