The Basque nationalist party between secessionism and separatism

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je popsat historii Baskické nacionalistické strany a analyzovat vybrané etapy činnosti strany, které byly charakteristické separatistickými a secesionistickými požadavky směrem k centrální vládě. Práce je rozdělena do několika částí. První část je teoretická, ve které se věnuji vysvětlení pojmu nacionalismus a dále také dvou stěžejních konceptů této práce - separatismu a secesionismu. V praktické části pak představuji jedinečnost baskického národa a jeho působení před vznikem EAJ-PNV. Poté následuje popis historického vývoje EAJ-PNV, který dělím do dvou období - před a po nástupu generála Franca k moci. V prvním období se zaměřuji zejména na počátky strany, které jsou spojeny s osobou a činností zakladatele strany EAJ-PNV Sabina Arany. V rámci druhé části práce se věnuji působení EAJ-PNV od počátku vlády Francisca Franca až do roku 2018. Historický exkurz slouží jako výchozí bod pro určení období, kdy byly v rámci strany nejsilnější separatistické a kdy secesionistické tendence. U těchto vybraných období vysvětluji, jaké byly důvody pro inklinaci k separatismu nebo secesionismu a rovněž představuji, jakým způsobem se EAJ-PNV snažila těchto cílů dosahovat. V práci se také věnuji hledání podpory baskického nacionalismu v zahraničí. EAJ-PNV hledá podporu neustále po celou dobu své historie. Strana fungovala jako jakési "patriotické kyvadlo" mezi secesionismem a separatismem, to však nemělo na hledání podpory v zahraničí žádný vliv, podpora se hledá neustále.

Abstract:

The main goal of this thesis is to describe the history of Basque Nationalist Party and also to closely analyse selected chapters of its activity, which were characteristic by separatist and secessionist demands towards the central government. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part, consisting mainly of theory, is dedicated to properly analysing the concept of nationalism and also two main themes of this work - separatism and secessionism. The practical part of this work presents the uniqueness of Basque nation and its development before the creation of EAJ-PNV, followed by a historical development of the party itself, divided into two parts - before and after General Franco's rise to power. In the first historical era, the thesis is focused on the roots of EAJ-PNV, which are closely connected to the party's founder Sabino Arana. The second part is focused on the partisan affairs of EAJ-PNV since Franco's assumption of power until the year 2018. This historical introduction serves as a background for determining periods in which the internal separatist and secessionist tendencies were the strongest. These periods are then closely analysed in terms of reasons of inclination towards separatism and secessionism and the analysis also includes examples of ways and means of EAJ-PNV to achieve such goals. A part of this work is also dedicated to explore foreign support of Basque nationalism. EAJ-PNV has been searching for support since the beginning of its existence. The party has served as a so called "patriotic pendulum" between secessionism and separatism; however it has had no effect on a search for foreign support, which continues until today.
