The referendum on European Constitutional Treaty 1st June 2005 in the Netherlands: the underlying reasons for the rejection of the Treaty

Abstract:

In my Thesis I deal with the Dutch rejection of the European Constitutional Treaty on 1st June 2005. I investigate reasons for rejection of the Treaty and attempt to see the issue in a broader view. The Dutch ``nee' as such is complex and a broader framework should be adopted for analysis. The aim of my thesis therefore is to review the anticipated motives of the rejection of the Constitutional Treaty in the Netherlands and analyze the reasons behind the shocking rejection of the European Constitution, which was supposed to increase legitimacy, by the pro-European Dutch. Regarding the broad nature of the topic I decided to focus on analyzing the issue firstly through second order election concept vs. issue voting concept. Secondly I deal with lack of a legitimacy of the European Union and the overall political situation in the Netherlands during that time. Thirdly I analyze the role of the campaigns in favor or against the European Constitution and their possible impact on the decision of the Dutch voters

Abstract:

V mé práci se zabývám nizozemským odmítnutím Evropské ústavní smlouvy v referendu 1. června 2005. Důvody, které vedly k odmítnutí smlouvy, jsem zkoumala z širšího pohledu. Nizozemské "nee" je velmi komplikované a proto bylo pro analýzu nutné využít několik teorií. Cílem mé práce tedy bylo zhodnotit předpokládané důvody odmítnutí Evropské ústavní smlouvy v Holandsku a analyzovat skutečné důvody, které stály za šokujícím odmítnutím Evropské ústavy tradičně proevropskými Nizozemci Jelikož se jedná o široké téma, rozhodla jsem se toto referendum analyzovat nejprve pomocí konceptu voleb druhého řádu a issue voting. Poté jsem se věnovala problému nedostatku legitimity Evropské Unie a politické situaci v Nizozemsku kolem zkoumaného referenda. Jako poslední jsem se věnovala analýze kampaně, která referendum provázela a její možné dopady na voliče. V práci je analyzován přístup domácí politické reprezentace k Evropským tématům a k přípravě referenda. Dále je zde selhání vlády a celého pro-tábora, efektivně prezentovat Evropskou Unii, vést reálnou debatu a šířit kvalitní informace o Evropské integraci identifikováno jako hlavní důvod neúspěchu Evropské ústavní smlouvy v Nizozemí. V práci jsou tato tvrzení doložena příklady několika situací, které se v Nizozemsku před referendem udály
