EFL/ESL Course Proposal: Genre-based Approach to Teaching Casual Conversation

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se snaží ukázat, že genre-based literacy pedagogy může být efektivně uplatněna při výuce ústní komunikace, a to konkrétně běžného rozhovoru. Význam genre-based přístupu k výuce mluvené řeči byl až doposud zkoumán pouze několika málo lidmi, kteří se soustředili převážně na jeho uplatnění při výuce pragmatických interakcí. Nicméně výzkumy ukazují, že povaha běžné konverzace je mnohem významnější, a to konkrétně pokud jde o výstavbu individuálních a společenských skutečností, ve kterých se lidé nacházejí. Diplomová práce tedy bádá nad způsoby, jimiž může být běžná konverzace zkoumána, popsána a následně explicitně vyučována. Genre theory, tedy generic analysis a genre-based literacy pedagogy, je představena jako relevantní metoda, která se osvědčila při výuce čtení a psaní jednak rodilých mluvčích anglického jazyka, jednak i při výuce EFL/ESL studentů, a to v průběhu zhruba třiceti let. Diplomová práce demonstruje, že jelikož je možné pohlížet na běžnou konverzaci z generic perspektivy, rozeznat její opakující se žánry a podžánry, a popsat jejich konkrétní projevy v jazyce, je pravděpodobné, že genre-based literacy pedagogy, která je již ve výuce čtení a psaní úspěšná, může být uplatněná také pří výuce mluvené řeči. Z tohoto důvodu je následně prezentován návrh kurzu, jehož struktura odráží metodologii genre-based literacy pedagogy a zahrnuje principy a aktivity běžně využívané v communicative language teaching, vybrané pro účely výuky jazyka užitého při běžném setkávání. Vzhledem k tomu, že návrh kurzu nebyl realizován v praxi, platnost metodologie nemůže být v současné chvíli potvrzena. Nicméně osobní zkušenost její aplikace v malém měřítku vede k přesvědčení, že existuje solidní naděje na uplatnění potenciálu genre-based literacy pedagogy při výuce mluvení. Schopnost studentů zapojit se v běžném rozhovoru má zásadní význam pro utváření jejich osobních příběhů. Diplomová práce tedy představuje odrazový můstek od výzkumu k uskutečnění, a navrhuje, že další výzkum v této oblasti a zájem o shromažďování a analýzu autentických textů různých konverzačních žánrů, je nezbytný.

Abstract:

The thesis aspires to show that the genre-based literacy pedagogy can be applicable to and beneficial for the teaching of oral communication, namely casual conversation. The relevance of the genre-based approach to the teaching of speaking has so far only been investigated by but a few people who mainly focused on its application to the teaching of transactional or pragmatic interactions. However, research notes that the nature of casual conversation is far more significant, specifically in terms of joint construction of individual and social realities. The thesis therefore explores ways in which casual talk can be examined, described, and consequently explicitly taught. The genre theory, i.e. generic analysis and genre-based literacy pedagogy, is introduced as a valid approach that proved successful in the teaching of reading and writing to native English speaking as well as EFL/ESL students throughout the course of thirty years. The thesis explains that since it is possible to address casual interaction from the generic perspective, identify its recurrent genres and subgenres, and describe their linguistic manifestations, it is likely that the already successful genre-based literacy methodology can also be applied to the teaching of speaking. Therefore, a course proposal, framework of which reflects the genre-based literacy methodology and builds in communicative language teaching principles and activities for the purposes of teaching casual encounters, is subsequently presented. Since the course proposal was not implemented into practice, the validity of the methodology could not be affirmed at this point. However, a small-scale personal experience in its application has led to the belief that there is a solid hope for valid potential of the genre-based literacy pedagogy in teaching speaking. Learners’ ability to engage in casual conversation is crucial for their personal stories. The thesis thus provides a stepping stone from research to application, and suggests that further work in that respect, as well as growing interest in the collection, examination and categorisation of authentic texts of various conversational genres is necessary.
