The Role of Body Size in Long-Term Partner Choice

Abstract:

Velikost těla hraje při výběru partnera u člověka významnou roli. Výška otce do určité míry ovlivňuje výslednou velikost novorozence, což se může projevit v mechanismu porodu. Teoretická část této práce se věnuje teorii pohlavního výběru, principům mechanismu lidského porodu a dosavadním poznatkům o vlivu velikostních rozdílů mezi partnery. Hlavním cílem praktické části této práce bylo zjistit na menším vzorku z české populace (50 párů), zda existuje souvislost mezi velikostními rozdíly rodičů a komplikacemi při porodu. Výsledky jsou v souladu s publikovanými poznatky popisujícími negativní dopad výrazných velikostních rozdílů mezi rodiči na průběh porodu a snižování rizika komplikací u porodu s narůstající šířkou pánevních rozměrů ženy. Kromě větších pánevních rozměrů měly ženy bez komplikací u porodu také větší hodnoty v obvodu hlavy a mozkovny, bigoniální a bizygomatické šířce a v šířce ramen.

Abstract:

For humans, body size plays a significant role in choosing mates. The final size of a newborn is partially affected by its father’s height, and it may affect the mechanism of childbirth as well. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with the theory of sexual selection, principles of childbirth mechanism and current knowledge of influence of height differences between partners. The main aim of the practical part of this thesis was to find out, whether there are some associations between difference of the parents’ heights and childbirth complications on the small sample from Czech population (50 couples). The obtained results are consistent with previously published findings suggesting negative impact of the significant size difference between parents on the course of childbirth and lower risk of complications in childbirth associated with increased pelvic width measurements. In addition to larger pelvic measurements, higher values in women without any complications during childbirth were observed also in head circumference, skull width, bigonial and bizygomatic width, and shoulder width.
